The Goderich Signal-Star, 1987-07-01, Page 5t,110 e Nal ACT Business Centre opens on West Street R.A. Andy Thompson triumphantly raises a piece of ribbon over his head after Mayor Eileen Palmer snipped the ceremonial ribbon, opening Thompson and Associates ACT Business Centre on West Street Friday. Also on hand for the opening of the company'sfirst retail operation were: Shelley Henry, programmer; Leon Altman, retail director; Mayor Palmer, Andy Thomspon, Warden Brian McBurney; Mary Allison, vice-president software support and Bill Parkinson, marketing representative for Huron. Thompson, who was born in Goderich and raised in Seaforth, left a food processing company in 1981 to pursue a career in.data processing and office administration consultation. He purchased a software company in Oakville in 1982 and developed distribution and manufacturing solutions. The business centre specializes in the manufacturing, distribution, agriculture and retail sectors. On June 15, the Seaforth Creamery installed one of the company's largest systems. (photo by Dave Sykes) Nuclear -free declaration is out of place and time reader argues Dear editor, "No Nukes Allowed in Goderich". The 'Town' Council should not have passed this motion. 1. Nuclear weapons comewithin the jurisdiction of the Canadian Department of ,National Defense, not municipal councils. 2. The motion serves no positive purpose .because: The only nuclear . bombs' about which we should be concerned are currently in storage or on-site it Russia and there was no provision in the motion for notifying the Kremlin that we do not condone, approve or even allow the storage or detonation of their nukes in our town. 3. The motion can serve a negative pur- pose, as pointed out by Coun. Stringer. It does convey we message .that we do not have the materials nor will to defend ourselves against nuclear attack nor to retalliate if attacked. Until Mikhail Gor- bachev putg more substance and glass in his glasnost (openness) campaign and gives evidence of w, range in Russian interna- tional policy it is fool -hardy to reduce our defenses which are poor enough as it is. 4. Abject helplessness is a useless defense when you are face ,to face with a confirmed bully. Check out the record in numerous eastern European countrie. The most ef- fective defense lays in being prepared and appearing to be prepared to do everything necessary to defend and retaliate if attack- ed. A friendly giant makes a lot' better part- ner and ally than a naked defenseless party UCW opposes capital punishment Doar°editor, Concerning the headline; UCW :supports capital punishment, over a story in the June 3 edition of the Signal -Star. ,What a surprise to read this headline! And then to read the article which was in direct oppostiion to it! With this letter we wish to inform your readers that the United Church Women (UCW ), voting on a resolution at the Lon- don Conference UCW, do not support the return of capital punishment by 99 per cent. Sincerely, Jean Hanly Corresponding secretary, North St. UCW Editor's Note: Mrs. Hanly is correct. While•the story outlined the UCW's collec- tive supportfor a resolution against the reinstatement of capital punishment, the headline erroneously suggested the op- posite. Support for the resolution from the 400 delegates was an overwhelming 99 per- cent. The Signal -Star regrets the error. Less litter looks better Dear Editor: To all the people responsible, for main- taining our parks, beaches, flower beds etc. I would like to congratulate you all for a job well done. Your efforts go a long way to making our town truly, "The Prettiest and don't know which way to turn, call Town In Canada." Our town would look even better, if the litter -bugs would make an effort to deposit their litter in the available receptacles. Mr. Mervyn Hoy 136 Bayfield Rd. Councillors were not elected to rule on ephemeral, meaningless nuances and sym- bols. The exercise, as pointed out by Coun- cillor Carey, was a virtual waste of council's time and energies. It was presented as a motherhood issue, as harmless and altriastic as declaring Goderich a pot -hole free zone. 6. This motion should not have been pass- ed because it may lead to the posting of signs yet, unadulterated me-tooism! 7. This motion should not have been pass= ed until we have had an effective iron -clad non -aggression pact with all potential ag- gressors and enemies, and in force for' an extended period of.time. It is out of place in GQderich and in time. Tom Meladv GQDERICH SIGNAL-STiAR, WEDNESDAY.
