Christmas
Days of yore
Christmas hasn't changed much in the 0-60000-
 4T U R E
past few years for children. ' They still
write Christmas letters to Santa asking for
dolls and trucks. They still help mom and REPORT
dad trim the Christmas tree. They still
hang Christmas stockings by the fire with
care They still wait at frost -covered win-
dows with their faces pressed against the
cold panes looking up into the dark sky to
eagerly ask "When does Santa come?" or
say "This year I'm staying up until,Santa
comes." No, it doesn't seem as if
Christmas has changed very much, or has
it?
Residents at Maitland Manor remember
celebrating Christmas in much the same
manner as today's children ,although there
are some differences.
"Now it's all buying and selling. There's
so much more of that now. I don't
remember it being like that when I was.
younger," 83 -year-old Mary Frayne said.
Mrs. Frayne was one of four children.
Along with an older brother, she had a
younger brother and sister.
"We always decorated a tree. Oh, you
had to have the Christmas tree. My
brother carried it home from downtown. I
never bothered much but the rest of the
kids did.
"When we were young we would ,go to
Midnight Mass with with our parents and
while we were gone, Santa came. When we
got home, all our presents were in place
but we didn't open them until Christmas
Day. For quite awhile I believed in Santa.
Later I found out that the neighbors -had
put the presents out while we were at
Mass," Mrs. Frayne said.
"We used to get more than one present
unless it was something very big that was
for the whole family," she said.
Mrs. Frayne, along with her parents and
siblings, would travel to her aunt's and un-
cle's homes on Christmas Day.
"They were brother and sister and lived
beside each other in a double house
(duplex). It was such a good time. There
was always somebody to play with when I
was little. But by the time my sister was
/ big enough to enjoy Christmas things had
changed."
For Maitland Manor resident Mary Yeo,
Christmas stockings were not hung by the
chimney.
"My sister and I put our stockings on the
foot of the bed and we would wake up in the
middle df the night and feel them. You
could feel the orange in the stocking but we
wouldn't look until morning," she said.
And what was in the stockings when she
looked in the morning?
"Oranges. They were a treat. There
wasn't a lot of chocolate like today," Mrs.
Yeo said. She added that her and her
sister usually got two gifts each for.
Christmas and that there was always a big
meal of turkey or duck for Christmas
dinner.
Although Mrs. Yeo and her late husband
had no children, they still celebrated
Christmas by going out for dinner to a
When asked what he remembered most
about Christmas when he was a child,
85 -year-old George Dougherty replied,
"The big feeds!"
"My mother used to raise turkeys,
geese, ducks and chickens so we (two
brothers and two sisters) used to have a
big Christmas dinner with turkey or goose
and plum pudding. I'd always eat too
much. I'm still that way, no matter how
old I get," Mr. Dougherty chuckled.
Getting the family's Christmas tree was
the boys responsibility, so they used to go
t the bush to get it.
"I never decorated it. The woman -folks
are supposed to decorate the tree, aren't
they?". he said.
Although Mr. D.ougherty and his
brothers and sisters always waited to see
Santa, they never did.
"My mother used to rap on the chimney
pipes and say that it was Santa Claus going
up the chimney. We thought it was really
him!" he said.
"We always had a good time on
Christmas Day. We would go for sleigh
rides. My sister liked the big hills. I liked
going down but I didn't like pulling the
sleigh back up the hill."
Although he says he's "not as young as I
used to be", Mr. Dougherty still enjoys
celebrating Christmas with his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren
and this year he will be going to visit his
son and daughter-in-law for Christmas.
"Christmas is pretty nice now too," he
said.
Cracking walnuts in front of the
fireplace on Christmas Day is one thing
that Alma Macewan remembers about
Christmas when she was a young girl.
"My two sisters and I used to hang our
stockings by the fireplace. I hung my
black cashmere stockings. They were fill-
ed with oranges and nuts but not as much
as children get today by any means," she
said.
"We always had presents from Santa
Claus. We never saw him but we always
heard him."
She said her family always had a
decorated tree and that she used to go
skating on Christmas Day.
"We've already had our Christmas din-
ner here (at Maitland Manor) and my
daughter was here with me for that but I'll
be staying here for Christmas Day," she
said.
So you see, Christmas hasn't changed
much in the past few years except for what
the children receive. They still hang their
stockings by the fireplace and they still
trim trees with mom and dad. But most
importantly, children still wait anxiously
and eagerly,to see Santa Claus and what he
left them under the Christmas tree as they
restaurant. did years ago.
