The Christmas season is a time of year
beloved to all. Time with family. Time for '
giving. Time for loving. While there are
many common denominators, each person
also has their own original thoughts on the
season.
Some, like the youngsters in Mrs.
Wark's Kindergarten class at Victoria
Public School, have some ideas about
Christmas you may never even have
thought of.
ROTTEN POTATOES
Matthew Sherrad, for instance, has
never seen Santa Claus and plans to keep it
that way. Matthew makes sure he is sound
asleep when St. Nick drops by..
"You don't wake up, or else he'll give
you a rotten potato," Matthew warns.
"Bad boys don't get presents, they get
rotten potatoes," Matthew explains, adding
that he has never received a decaying
vegetable himself because he is generally
well-behaved.
Helping to put the decorations on the
Christmas tree is another favorite part of
the season for Matthew, but not as much
fun as taking them down, he contends.
"On Christmas, we take the candy canes
down and eat them," he said.
Matthew's most treasured Christmas
gift, he said, was a Care Bear; he received
one Yuletide.
HAT LIKE AN ELF
Jeffrey Woodcock has seen Santa Claus
himself, on two different occasions in a
London Shopping mall and so, has some
pretty definite ideas about the old gent's
appearance.
"He has a big, big beard and a hat like
an elf. He has books for everyone. He has
candy for everyone and he has presents for
everyone. He has a black belt and mittens
and red cheeks. And, he also has lot's of
people's letters," said Jeffrey, who has
written to Santa himself on more than one
occasion.
Wrapping and opening presents are
among • Jeffrey's favorite Christmas ac-
tivities, as well as helping the family trim
the Christmas tree.
"My Mom and Dad and my sister and
me," all work together on the project, he
said.
Just recently, Jeffrey had a special
seasonal experience, when he was chosen
to play an angel in a church Christmas
play. Jeffrey enjoyed his acting debut,
though he admits he didn't have a lot of
lines.
"I only had two things to say, but I had to
sing and sing," he remembers. Another
neat thing about the play was "we stayed
up pretty late," he added.
The real meaning of Christmas is not
lost on Jeffrey, who says:
"That baby Jesus was born, that's what
I like about Christmas best!"
GOOD IDEA
Jason McConnell also thinks a big
celebration at Christmas is a good idea.
"Because it's Jesus birthday."
Jason's family already has their
Christmas tree up and decorated and he
says he is looking forward to an annual
visit from his cousins.
Jason will be leaving out milk and
cookies for Santa Claus, whom he has
never seen "because he comes when I'm
asleep."
Jason isn't quite sure why he does it, but
he knows that Santa Claus "makes toys
and he gives them to children."
VISIT GRANDPARENTS
For Gillian Hubick and her family,
Christmas is a time to visit with
grandparents.
"We have fun," she says.
How much does she ,,know about Santa
Claus?
"He's called St. Nicholas and he brings
presents to girls and boys," she explains,
at least, "if you're good he does, but if
you're bad, he doesn't."
Gillian has had a chance to see Santa
Claus in past years, but has not visited
with St. Nicholas this year. She says her
younger brother has also sat on Santa's
knee, but doesn't always fully appreciate
the experience.
"Sometimes when he sits on Santa's lap,
he doesn't exactly know who he is,", she
confides.
Gillian says Santa visits her house, but
she's never seen him there.
"I'm fast asleep," she explains. She has
a book about St. Nicholas and enjoys wat-
ching television Christmas specials, like
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
"Getting the presents and spending time
with family," are her favorite parts of the
holiday season.
A FUN TIME
"It's a fun time," said Nicole Smith.
Nicole enjoys "wrapping presents and
opening them," although she.belieyes the
latter pastime is 'more fun.
Christmas tree decorating is also high on
her list of things to do.
"We put up a small one;" said Nicole.
Santa Claus, to Nichole, is a man who
lives at the North Pole and "brings toys to,
us."
She has never seen Santa, "because
we're asleep when he comes," says Nicole,
who adds she does not think St. Nick would
make his appearance if she stayed up to
wait for him.
"When we open up the presents," is the
highlight of Christmas day for this
youngster.
So there you have it. No matter what else
you are doing Christmas Day, you had bet-
ter be asleep when Santa Claus makes his'
visit. Otherwise, you might just end up
with a .rotten potato, instead of a present,
in your stocking.
