Mia Da1tin chosen as one of Ontario's
Junior Citizens of the Year y 'S;CNA
Goderich area resident Maria (Mia )
Dalton has been named one of Ontario's 10
Junior Citizen's of the Year by the Ontario
Community Newspaper Association
representing the province's weekly
newspapers, Elizabeth Myers, the Junior
Citizen co-ordinator for the ..associatio,
said.
Mia won the a*ard for her work in pro-
moting world development in Haiti, one of
the poorest countries in the Western
Hemisphere. °
Mia's first trip to Haiti was in March
1985 with a Mississauga based group, who
travelled under the name Haitian Ex-
perience '85. While there, she and the
other students spent most of the 10 days
visiting the poverty-stricken areas of Haiti
and met the people, observed their living
conditions, and helped in their day-to-day
work by planting trees or painting walls.
She also visited hospitals and orphanages.
After returning to Goderich,,Miaaqq spoke
to many groups in the Goderich area
spreading knowledge of Haiti's needs and
problems.
This past summer Mia co-ordinated a
July missionary trip ( Haitian Experience
Mia Dalton
'86) which saw four local people (Connie
Osborn, .Laurie Erb, -Mary Margaret
Fuller and Mia's mother, Clarice) join Mia
and other people from Guelph and
Mississauga travel to Haiti.
The group took a truckload of soap,
clothes, q -tips, toothbrushes, toothpaste
_and cutlery that had been collected
throughout the year by area elementary
schools, service clubs and church groups
in Goderich, Dungannon, Auburn, Nile and
Kincardine to Haiti.
Mia was nominated for the Junior
Citizen award by Connie Osborn and Dr.
James Rourke. -
Mrs. Osborn noted in her nomination of
Mia that "Mia Dalton has displayed
courage, compassion and action in pro-
moting world development in the poorest
country in the Western Hemisphere - Haiti.
.. This young girl is doing something con-
crete to bring peace and happiness to a
war torn and poverty stricken country."
Mia and the other award winners will be
presented with their awards during the On-
tario Community Newspapers Association
convention to be held March 6, 1987 in
Toronto.
artha makes annual trek south
I just know how busy you are — all the ex-
citement of Christmas — so have a happy
one. Besides all this, I wish you LOVE and
pass it around.
Sorry I've been missing for a few weeks.
The hassle of getting away to Florida was
unbelievable — but it happens every year
and I'll probably never change it. If I could
just change my bad habits and take control
— no, there's no fun in that.
On a cold miserable day we headed for
Windsor, made one stop at the McPherson
Lunch place before we cut across the coun-
try toward the 401. We made good time, but
it seemed endless! Slush, cold and icy winds
greeted us when we arrived in Windsor and
it stayed until we took off at International
Airport, Detroit, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. with a two-
hour stopover in Chicago. Can you believe
that?
Arrived in Tampa about 10 p.m., I was
worried about the low ceiling at take -off, but
we were quickly through those dark clouds
and saw a beautiful sunset.
This year we managed to have bus service
from Windsor instead of Don and Frances
driving all those miles to the Detroit airport.
The little lady bus driver slugged our lug -

gage easily and there was laughter and
chatter all the way. At Immigration, she
said, "I have four passengers for the air-
port," and away we go. Unbelievable!
At take off we were soon above the dark
clouds and above the sea — it really looked
like a rolling ocean!
The journey was really pleasant. Doug
and Madeline met tits at Tampa and about
ninety miles later we were in Venice. We
were there nearly a week or more. For the
first two days, I was wiped out. ZUNCK! I
,slowly revived. My kids know this and really
take care of us. We are lucky to have four
wonderful people looking out for us here and
in Windsor. -
On the weekend we drove to Sarasota, 20
minutes to get the "Green Hornet" (my
car), open the trailer, put bike and things on
the patio. I thought the car muffler was
gone, but it was trouble in the cross-over
pipe. It had lost its "donut"! The noise was
terrible starting up, but coasting is quieter.
I am doing the Spring cleaning. I start
with the dishes, pots and pans and work my
way through the house. About the time you
finish, it is time to start over again. But, it is
great to be out of the ice and snow!
It has been great seeing our friends her in
the park. I've been so busy, 1 hadn't seen too
many ove them, but last night I played shuf-
fleboard. 'Had a great game and a lot of
fun.In the afternoon I helped with the coffee
and donuts served to the Shufflers, a visiting
team and friends who were playing here.
The sun was blistering hot and we haven't
too much shelter for the onlookers. Helping
gave me a good chance to see many friends
in one place. So, I'm gradually getting
around.
I was told not many folks were using the
pool table, so I'll do something about that
pretty soon.
I still haven't been to see my art teacher
and friend who lives just a "stone's throw"
away. I'm anxious to get into painting
again. I have several to do. Hope I have all
my "bits and pieces" with me.
There are 'flowers blooming everywhere
and soon -a flaming maple tree will be in
bloom. Bloom? It is so red and pretty it
seems to be blooming. Everyone has low -
growing flowering plants around their
trailers that bloom the year round.
Keep well folks, and take care of. each
other. (P.S. Sure miss my bridge games I
Love you all:
Martha
