GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECLMBER 17, 1986—PAGE 1B
Season's
Pass
Andy Bader
,
'Tis the
season for
anything
Christmas time brings out the shop-
pers, and shoppers shop for something
that's needed. In the wonderfully wacky
world of sports, athletes also search for
their treasure at the cheapest possible
price.
For instance, Borjc Salming of the
Toronto Maple Leafs probably put on the
top of his list to Santa this year a new
face. Wendel Clark undoubtedly asked
for new knuckles with which to play with.
John Brophy inquired about goal scorers,
Miroslav Frycer and Peter Ihnacak both
probably wish they had a one-way ticket
back to Czechoslovakia–at least they got
chance to play hockey there.
oh Froese also asked for a bona fide
chance to play goal for the Philly Flyers.
Secretly, he probably wishes Ron Hextall
would fall off of a sleigh somewhere and
break a fibula.
Marcel Dionne asks for the same
blasted thing each and every Christmas–
respect. The veteran is the epitome of a
National Hockey League superstar yet
no one seems to notice. Bryan Trottier
and Bernie Federko are two others in the
same boat as Marcel.
In Sabreland (Buffalo), the worst team
in the NHL collectively yearned for a
new team. Their present collection of
skaters aren't much too shout about.
Joe Murphy, the first overall choice of
the Detroit Red Wings, wishes he was
back in college. At least as far away as
possible from Jacques Demers. Adiron-
dack is the last place on earth one would
want to spend the festive season
(Lakawana ranks a close second).
Scotty Bowman yearns for a new job,
Don Cherry a new set of suits (and some
dog food), Dave Hodge his old job back,
Harold Ballard the Stanley Cup and
Wayne Gretzky put on the top of his agen-
da a league in this universe where he
would have at least a run for his money in
the scoring derby.
Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills needs
wide receivers, Don Shula a defence,
.Charles Martin a second chance at
McMahon; Reuben Mayes the rookie of
xhe'year award and Indianapolis a team:
Period. Tampa Bay wants Vinn3
Testaverde, since it's obvious In-
dianapolis doesn't want him.
Pat Gillick wanted an early present
this yuletide season–a lefthander for his
Blue Jays. He didn't get it. Although his
New Year's Resolution could be
something dramatic.
Damaso Garcia wants a trade, Jack
Morris big bucks to throw a round slab of
cowhide, Andre Dawson natural turf and
daytime baseball.
The fans of the NBA would all wish for
a slump of the Boston Celtics and a
Michael Jordan for every team. If that
couldn't be arranged, Dominique Wilkins
would be the next best thing.
• Michael Jordan obviously wishes he
were out of Chicago, Patrick Ewing out
of the big apple (keep hope, Patrick, next
season the writers might claim it's all a
dream) and Sacramento a winning
franchise.
Sports purists everywhere undoubted-
ly yearn for the elimination of Australian
Rules Football, World Wrestling Federa-
tion (WWF) Wrestling and Brent
Musberger's scalp.
While we're at it, let's also eliminate
the smile of Iry Cross, the voice of Mary
Albert, the play-by-play technique of Bob
Cole, the moveable jawbone of Dick Ir-
vin, the FTD commercials of Merlin
Olsen and the `challenging position' of
Gary Dornhoefer:
Some things we'd all like to see thi
Christmas is the destruction of the
Chicago.,Bears (yup, the whole team), a
free shot at a Sutter (anyone, it doesn't
matter which one), and Steve Garvey's
hair messed up. Just one tiny hair, Santa,
• that's all we ask!
Sports fans I'm sure would also pay
cash money to see the Skin's Game in
golf more ' than twice a year, John
McEnroe routed every time he walked on
a tennis court, Yannick Noah's incredi-
ble between -the -leg tennis shots and
Vince McMahon turn around and pound
the tar out of Jesse 'The Body' Ventura.
• Ah, Christmas, 'tis the best season of
•t year. he ear. II6the only time we can ask for
anything we want without fear of embar-
rassment, harassment or loss of life.
Maybe I'll ask for a raise....
Shawn Larder (20) of the Goderich Sailors missed a golden opportunity to score in the
Sailors' Junior C contest Friday night at home to Hanover, but Larder did rebound to score
twice in the contest. The league -leading Barons ripped the Sailors 17-4, scoring nine times in
the third period to. run away with the victory. Sailors' goalie Randy Gaynor (left) -had so
much rubber fired at him in the contest, referee Brad Horton checked to see how he felt at
different times in the game. (photos by Andy Bader)

The Goderich Sailors dropped a pair of
weekend games in OHA Junior C hockey,
losing 17-4 to the high-powered Hanover
Barons here Friday and 10-7 to the Wingham
Ironmen Sunday in Wingham.
The Sailors have a re -match with the
Ironmen here Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Against Hanover, t:. Sailors got off to a
'.'slow start playing a. !.,though they were in
awe' of the BaoOii ' 'reputation. Hanover
scored four unanswered first period goals.
In the second period; the Sailors got -fired up
and played ••.'some excellent hockey even
though they were outscored 4-3. .
Darren Doak scored the Sailors' first goal
on a nice play with Dave Duncan and then
Shawn Larder scored a pair for the Sailors,
one on an especially pretty passing play
with Todd Graham.
Graham got the fourth Sailors' goal early,
in the third period with assists going to
Larder and Rob Gibbons.. and it looked as
though the Sailors mightmake a game of it
with the powerful Barons.
However, Hanover's strong physical
game and fast skating wore the Sailors
down and nine unanswered 'goals buried the
locals and turned the game into a rout.
Graham totals five assists

Goderich Sailors' goalie Randy Gaynor must have felt surrounded the entire night as the
visiting Hanover Barons swarmed all over the Sailors 17-4 in Junior C hockey action Friday
night in Goderich. The Sailors stayed relatively close with the league -leading Barons, but a
nine -goal outburst by the visitors sent the game into a rout. (photo by Andy Bader)
first and second periods and 4-3 in the third.
Mitch Braun in the Wingham goal made
several big stops that were probably the dif-
ference in the game. At least three of the
stops came on clearcut breakaway
opportunities.
Jeff . Walden and Paul Tolton 'had two
goals each to • pace the Ironmen. Dan
Gilchrist, Doug McFarlan, Jamie Robinson,
Jason Goodall, Steve Nicholson and Brad
Priestap scored one goal apiece.
For the Sailors, Jim Beattie and Shawn
Larder were two -goal men. Ken Huff, Bruce
Culbert and Shawn Durnin got the other
Goderich goals. Todd Graham was the big
playmaker for the Sailors, assisting on five
of his team's goals.
The Sailors player procurement program
continues, with John Thompson returning to
the active list Sunday. Defenceman Scott
Stokes is expected to be in the line-up for the
first time Friday here when the Sailors and

period.
Goderich never gave up, though, and at-
tempted a comeback. Dave Duncan scored
an unassisted marker to pull the home team
within one. The Midgets applied constant
pressure in the St. Marys end in the final
three minutes of the contest but they came
up just a few seconds short when the puck
entered the net one second after the buzzer
sounded.
It was a total team effort from Goderich
and it was a truly entertaining game to
watch.
The next night in Dorchester, the Midgets
skated to a 6-1 win.
Goderich came out hitting and played a
very solid defensive game. Goderich took
the lead when Mike Beange scored from
Cauchi and Jeff Boyd in the opening period.
Goderich went up by three after Darrell
Durnin took' a pass from Gary Erb and
The Goderich Legion Midgets continued
their Shamrock League schedule with a win MINOR HOCKEY
and a loss last week.
The loss was a heartbreaker Saturday simmasimillim
night here against St. Marys as the locals
dropped an 8-7 score.
St. Marys built a 4-1 lead after Goderich
opened the scoring when Mark Cauchi
scored assisted by Mike Beange and Darrell
Durnin. St. Marys scored their four goals
mainly on rebounds as Goderich had
troubles clearing the puck out of their own
end. Wayne Nivens pulled Goderich to
within two when he scored his first of the
night from Byron Bowman late in the open-
ing period. Unfortunately, the Midgets gave
up another goal with 23 seconds remaining
in the period. •
The game continued back and forth in the
middle period and Goderich scored twice in
the ttrst five minutes. Nivins scored his se-
cond after being set up by Scott Glew and
Ian MacKinnon. A minute later Mike Rad-
ford made it 5-4 as Dave Duncan and Barry
Thompson drew the assists. But again St.
Marys replied with two of their own to forge
ahead 7-4. Cauchi scored his second of the
night from Bean and Beange before the mid-
dle, session ended.
In the third frame, the game turned into
end to end rushes as Goderich scored twice
and St. Marys once. Barry Thompson was
set up by Bean and Bowman as th'e Midgets
tried to close the gap. St. Marys scored' the

scored while Barry Thompson scored a few
minutes later with Bean and Boyd drawing
assists. \klith four minutes left in the period,
Dorchester ruined Greg Townsend's shutout
bid on a partial breakaway.
The goal didn't matter, though, as the
tight defence held for the rest of the game
and provided offensive support as well. Tom
Bean beat the Dorchester goalie from the
blueline when MacKinnon and Cauchi set
him up.
Duncan made the score 5-1 with a wrist
shot t6 the top corner after taking a pass
from Thompson. Gary Erb rounded out the
scoring with a od rush with less
two
minutes to play.t
Durninreceived the lone
assist.
Goderich plays at home Saturday night
against Mount Brydges at 8:30 p.m., -and
then travels to St. Marys for a game on the

twice in 54 win
Jeff Klages scored a pair of goals to lead
the Goderich Blue Atoms to a 5-1 win over
Bayfield in Huron -Perth play on December
5 in Goderich.
Klages' first goal of the game broke a 1-1
second period deadlock as the home team
proceeded to score four unanswered
markers to record the win.
Jeremy Powell opened the scoring for
Goderich early in the first period with Ben
Armstrong assisting. Less than one minute
later, Bayfield tied the game before Klages
scored 13 minutes into the opening period
with Darnell Connelly assisting.
Goderich scored two more goals in the
middle' session to take a 4-1 lead. Mark
Riehl, with Jason Meriam assisting, and
Meriatn scored less than two minutes apart
to increase the locals' lead.
Klages completed the scoring with his se-
cond goal of the contest with less than four
minutes to play in the game. ,
