A young lad wad banging away at the video game machine. Nothing was hap- pening since he had no money for it so final- ly I gave him a quarter. It was well worth it to see that big, wonderful smile. I went on hanging my paintings. It was only a minute later that I looked towards the machine but no-one was there. I couldn't believe it. That quarter must have been pretty important to him. Anyway, I enjoyed the smile. Spur of the moment things are usually odd. Alexander Graham Bell once said "Don't keep forever on the public road, going only A,, w::=si'e others had gone. Leave W,e beaten path occassionally and drive into the woods. You will be certain to find something you have never seen before. Of course it will be a little thing but do not ignore it. Follow it up, explore all around it. One discovery will lead to another and before you know it you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. Big discoveries are now in your mind as a result of your thoughts." Young folk making a start should think about Mr. Bell and how he created his ' discoveries. Re -read about his early strug- gles, they can be very helpful. The other day I inet a very interesting young man ( the son of Harold McGee) from Naniamu, British Columbia. Son David is in the newspaper business and so he knows our Signal -Star and heartily praised my little column, which he has enjoyed for many years. How about that. What a nice sur- prise. It is really nice when yolks take the time to give a compliment or a little bit of Friends playful cat bites Dear Advisor: Everytime I go over to Alesh's place her cat Shinny always bites my toes and does it every hurt! Can you help? Yours sincerely, Erin Dear Erin: Put some alltun on your toes or shoes. Allum is stuff that you put in pickels. It's very sour and the cat won't like it. I put it on my fingernails and I don't bit them anymore because it tastes awful. 'Dear Advisor: Some of my favorite TV shows come on after I go to bed and I' would like to watch them. What can I do? Your friend, Tara Dear Tara: If you have a VCR have your parents tape it for you when you are sleeping so that you can watch it the next day. If you don't have praise. It really made my day. Everyone, no matter what they struggle with, could use and "E" for effort once in a while, don't you think? Last weekend I had some phone calls kid- ding about my last, week's column. "Glad to hear you are bac to your old wood stove. Hope you haven't a bad cold from the freez- ing rain when you got lost." "Can't figure how you made it to the river from the but- cher shop." "Didn't know you had moved back to Wilson Street." "Last Wednesday was sunny. Where did you find sleet and freezing temperatures?" arrid so on. That happened 20 year ago, not last week. Today I have a surprise for you. Everyone has been asking when we leave for the south. We are leaving on the ninth. How about that. I had been saying that I would like to go , earlier but I didn't realize how early it might be. It is really hot down there, so I'm told, but the cold wind has chilled my bones and I think I'll be happy in the "heat." Take care. Love you all, Martha. and nibbles on toes KIDS KORNER Colleen Osborn one, ask your parents to watch it for you and tell you about it. Dear Advisor: I have a problem.I keep on forgetting things. It is the four weeks before Christmas when Christians around the world await the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. Worship services centre around the events leading up to the great Bethlehem event, and many churches feature Advent wreaths with four candles (three purple, one rose) circling the white Christ Candle. One candle is lit on the First Sunday in Advent, two candles on the Second Sunday in Advent etc. The Christ Candle is lit Christmas Eve signifying that Jesus is The Light of the World. students who helped with babysitting.
