Alexander Graham ':ell urged people
to take the less travelled path
An odd thing happened the other day at
the Mall. A young lad wad banging away at
the video game machine. Nothing was hap-
pening since he had no money for it so final-
ly I gave him a quarter. It was well worth it
to see that big, wonderful smile. I went on
hanging my paintings. It was only a minute
later that I looked towards the machine but
no-one was there. I couldn't believe it. That
quarter must have been pretty important to
him. Anyway, I enjoyed the smile. Spur of
the moment things are usually odd.
Alexander Graham Bell once said "Don't
keep forever on the public road, going only

w::=si'e others had gone. Leave W,e beaten
path occassionally and drive into the woods.
You will be certain to find something you
have never seen before. Of course it will be
a little thing but do not ignore it. Follow it
up, explore all around it. One discovery will
lead to another and before you know it you
will have something worth thinking about to
occupy your mind. Big discoveries are now
in your mind as a result of your thoughts."
Young folk making a start should think
about Mr. Bell and how he created his
' discoveries. Re -read about his early strug-
gles, they can be very helpful. Bell, the in-

The other day I inet a very interesting
young man ( the son of Harold McGee) from
Naniamu, British Columbia. Son David is in
the newspaper business and so he knows our
Signal -Star and heartily praised my little
column, which he has enjoyed for many
years. How about that. What a nice sur-
prise. It is really nice when yolks take the
time to give a compliment or a little bit of
Friends playful cat bites
Dear Advisor:
Everytime I go over to Alesh's place her
cat Shinny always bites my toes and does it
every hurt! Can you help?
Yours sincerely, Erin
Dear Erin:
Put some alltun on your toes or shoes.
Allum is stuff that you put in pickels. It's
very sour and the cat won't like it. I put it on
my fingernails and I don't bit them anymore
because it tastes awful.
'Dear Advisor:
Some of my favorite TV shows come on
after I go to bed and I' would like to watch
them. What can I do?
Your friend, Tara
Dear Tara:
If you have a VCR have your parents tape
it for you when you are sleeping so that you
can watch it the next day. If you don't have
praise. It really made my day. Everyone,
no matter what they struggle with, could use
and "E" for effort once in a while, don't you
think?
Last weekend I had some phone calls kid-
ding about my last, week's column. "Glad to
hear you are bac to your old wood stove.
Hope you haven't a bad cold from the freez-
ing rain when you got lost." "Can't figure
how you made it to the river from the but-
cher shop." "Didn't know you had moved
back to Wilson Street." "Last Wednesday
was sunny. Where did you find sleet and
freezing temperatures?" arrid so on.
That happened 20 year ago, not last
week.
Today I have a surprise for you.
Everyone has been asking when we leave
for the south. We are leaving on the ninth.
How about that.
I had been saying that I would like to go ,
earlier but I didn't realize how early it
might be.
It is really hot down there, so I'm told, but
the cold wind has chilled my bones and I
think I'll be happy in the "heat."
Take care. Love you all, Martha.

Dear Advisor:
I have a problem.I keep on forgetting
things. How should I stop forgetting things?
I hope you can help.
Dear Robert:
Thank You, Robert
It will help if you put a calendar in your
room and write on it the things you want to
remember and it might help. The most im-
portant thing for that day - write icon the in-
side of your hand, but your parents and
teacher might not like it.

Robertson students entertain Manor residents
By. SUSAN SMALL
and CRYSTAL BOA
Students at Robertson are currently
preparing packages to be sent to students in
Quebec whom they will be twinning with.
Each student will have a Quebec student
as a twin and both will be writing to each
other and exchanging souvenirs. By next
week, 7A will have their first package ready
for mailing and we hope they receive it
before Christrnas. 7A students can. hardly
wait to see who their twins are. They are
also practicing a Christmas play in French
for the Christmas concert which is on
December 17.
Miss Rankin's Grade 1 and 2 students
went to Maitland Manor last Tuesday to ging
some songs. They sang a number of fun
songs accompanied by Miss Rankin on
guitar and some children on percussion.
They sang Australian songs and Christmas
songs. Everyone enjoyed themselves and'
the class is looking forward to their trip to
the hospital next Friday where they will be
singing for the patients and hopefully make
them feel better.
"Down Under Days" was the topic of the
Regional Enrichment Workshop for Grades
3 and 4 students. The workshop was held at
Robertson. Twenty-two students from Vic-
toria, Brookside, Colborne, Holmesyille and
Robertson schools attended. Topics includ-
ed. Australian animals, legends, explorers,
history'Ind modern' lifestyle. On the second
day, the students prepared the national
dessert "Pavlova" which was a real
delights.

Advent
Advent is the first season of the new church
year. It is the four weeks before Christmas
when Christians around the world await the
celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.
Worship services centre around the events
leading up to the great Bethlehem event, and
many churches feature Advent wreaths with
four candles (three purple, one rose) circling
the white Christ Candle. One candle is lit on
the First Sunday in Advent, two candles on
the Second Sunday in Advent etc. The Christ
Candle is lit Christmas Eve signifying that
Jesus is The Light of the World.
students who helped with babysitting.
We are sorry to say that due to Mr. Her-
man's illness, the senior choir could not sing
on Friday night at the Festival of Lights.
Mrs. Smith's class went bowling on Fri-
day morning and then they had lunch at
McDonald's. •
• Mr. Currie's Grade 5 students have been
very busy with research projects these past
few weeks. One group has been in.. the
library with Miss Broadwell studying score
projects on agriculture. They did have some
time to use the puppets and the kit made,by
the Women's Institute for the schools •
The Robertson Christmas float won third
prize in the school category. It, was organiz-
ed by the student's council and was put
together by the whole school. A special
thanks to Miss Broadwell for volunteering
her time. It was greatly appreciated.
