A drama program geared to teenagers
will culminate in two performances at the
Livery Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
The prdgram, sponsored by the
Goderich Recreation Department, is call-
ed "Creative Drama for Youth" and 11
teens aged 13 to 15 -years -old will be perfor-
ming two plays: the Charles Dickens
classic 'A Christmas Carol' and the ever -

STRATFORD - A top-flight team of direc-
tors and designers has been assembled for
1987 as the Stratford Festival celebrates its
35th anniversary season. Festival Artistic
Director John Neville announced his final
play selections and directors and designers
for most of the 13,productions to be staged in
1987 ( five each in the festival and Avon
Theatres plus three Young Company pro-
ductions at the Third Stage). Opening week
(June 1- 6) will feature three shows each in
the Festival and Avon Theatres plus two
Young Company productions.
"I think we have put together an excellent
team," John Neville said. "I .am gratified
these outstanding artists have agreed to
participate and look forward to an extraor-
dinary year as we celebrate our 35th an-
niversary season."
The season opens June 1 in the Festival
Theatre with the Broadway musical hit -
Cabaret and marks the return to Stratford
of director and choreographer Brian Mac-
donald and designer Susan Benson. Musical
direction will be by Berthold Carriere with
lighting design by Michael J. Whitfield.

"It's an eight-week program for kids 13
to 15 -years -old," Recreation Department
Program Coordinator Bob Marshall said.
"We run a Children's Little Theatre up un-
til age 12, but there are a few really good
kids involved and they wanted to continue
so we developed a program for these

Cabaret reunites the team responsible for
the Festival's smash hit production of The
Mikado and runs through November 1.
Bertolt Brecht's modern masterpiece
Mother Courage (in the English translation
by Ralph Manheim) opens June 3 in the
Festival Theatre. It will be directed by Ar-
tistic Director John Neville with musical
direction and music composed by Berthold
Carriere, design by Sue LePage and lighting
design by Louise Guinand. Mother Courage
runs through July 26.
Final opening week production in the
Festival Theatre is The School For Scandal,
Richard Brinsley Sheridan's timeless com-
edy of manners. It will be directed by Robin
Phillips (director of the critically acclaimed
1986 Festival production of Cymbeline with
costume design by Ann Curtis and lighting
design by Michael J. Whitfield. The School
For Scandal opens June 5 and is in session
through September 5.
The 12est of Shakespearean tragedy and
comedy completes the Festi$yal Theatre
playbill with Othello opening July 31 and
Much Ado About Nothing opening August 7.

At the Avon Theatre, the season opens

(director of the Festival's acclaimed 1986
production of Henry VIII with design by Sue
LePage and lighting design by Michael J.

Troilus and Cressida with design by Debra

Cherry Orchard Directed by John Wood
( director of the Festival's 1986 production of
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead)
with design by Ultz and music composed by
Alan Laing, The Cherry Orchard opens June
6 and runs through October 31.
Two remarkable contemporary plays
round out the season in the Avon Theatre.
Not About Heros by Stephen MacDonald
captures the extraordinary encounter and
subsequent friendship between Siegfried
Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, two outstanding
British poets of the World War One period. It
will be directed by Robert Beard with
design by Michael Eagan and lighting
design by Michael J. Whitfield. Not About
Heroes opens June 25 and runs through
September 4.
intimate Admiration by Richard Epp is an
account off the relationship between Anton
Chekhov and his leading actress Olga Knip-
per. Directed by John Wood with design by
Andrew Murray in association with Ultz, it
opens June 26 and runs through October 31.
The Young Company. under the direction
of Robin Phillips will present two
Shakespearean productions during Opening
Week.
