The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-12-03, Page 5WI donates X500 to hospital The Goderich Women's Institute had a rich legacy of service and dedication to service work in the town of Goderich for 75 years. While it served the community for over, seven decades, last year the WI was forced to disband because of a dwindling membership. Before the dissolution of the service group, the WI made donations to several worthy projects in town including a $500 donation to Alexandra Marine and General Hospital. President Mrs. George Morley and secretary, Elizabeth Sitter made the presentation to administrator Ken Englestad late last year and the money, which was, initially to be used for equip- ment purchases, has been added to the fund to purchase a new surgical microscope for the hopsital. The microscope, which costs about $10,000 is needed to enable medical staff to perform certain types of ear surgery on children. (photo by Andy Bader) Expense account system to be reviewed The administrative committee will review the proceedure for handling ex- pense vouchers, submitted by town employees and representatives for ex- penses incurred while out-of-town on of- ficial business„ at their next meeting. The matter was reffered to committee after Counc. Jim Searls had raised the question of receipts at several recent coun- cil meetings. Searls' concern centres on a recent Municipal Police Association con- vention, for which some expenses were paid before receipts were submitted. Park damaged Optimist 1'ark nias ween eiiecLiveiy tius- ed to traffic by the installation of a row of ceciar posts. Parks Superintendent Peter Spain informed the Parks and Waterfront Committee recently that great damage has occurred in the park from motor vehicles- spinning tires in the grass field and driving up and down the hill. The committee is also considering wor- ding of a "No Tobagganing" sign for the park. Service revamped Though no official memorial service for the sailors who lost their lives in the storm of November 1913 was held this year, a new format for the service has been decid- ed upon for the future. Deputy Reeve John Doherty and Parks Superintendent Peter Spain laid a wreath at the Unknown Sailor's grave on Nov. 9. Community News In the future, the service will be a simple one, held on Nov. 9, with an invited padre. Service times will be advertised in ad- vance and interested parties will be welcome to attend. Support resolution Goderich Town Council supported a resolution at the Nov. 24 meeting from the Villllage of Millbrook, petitioning the Ministry of Citizenship and Culture to ex- tend the Bulding Rehabilitation and Im- provement Campaign (BRIC) beyond Dec. '31,1986. BRIC's mandate is the conservation and preservation of the history of communities through building rehabilitation and improvements. Reciprocal insurance The Adminsitrative Committee of Goderich Town Council will consider the idea of Municipal Reciprocal Insurance, a self-insurance program for municipalities, at the first committee meeting in December. In reaction to high municipal insurance rates, the provincial government has ,agreed to allow municipalites to form thier own reciprocali insurance exchange. Under the proposed arangement, said a letter to council from Slade Insurance Brokers Inc., Kincardine, municipalites would control, administer and finance their own program without involvement from insurance companies, at least for the first $1 million of all liabilities. 'lour Champion Mayor Eileen Palmer and members of Goderich Town Council have accepted an invitation to tour the Champion Road Machinery plant, in Goderich, at a conve- nient time yet to be agreed upon. Champion exended the invitation to the council in honor of the company's 100th an- niversary of operation. Reflective edges Three patrons of the Huron County Public Library have requested a reflective edge be painted on the outside steps of thelibrary. They have found it difficult to judge the depth of the steps at night and are concerned that they, or others, may fall. Town Council has referred the request to the Goderich Works and Property Com- mittee, with power to act. Also referred to the works committee with .power to act was a petition signed by 11 residents and business people in the area of The Square, requesting the town in- stall a street light on an existing pole in the alleyway behind the Bank of Montreal. "This alleyway is extremely dark and certainly not safe for anyone to use at night," said the petition. Answers to Recreation • from page S Give yourself one point for each correct answer. 1.
