How Much Do You Know About Recrea-
tion in Goderich?
By now, most Goderich residents will be .
aware that a major survey of the town's
recreation needs has been underway since
last summer. To date, public input has
been sought through two public meetings,
a major town and township telephone
survey ( 300 households ), interviews with
key community leaders and the submis-
sion of briefs from over 40 clubs and
organizations involved in recreation. in
town.
A wealth of information has been col-
lected, and is now published in a
preliminary Data Base Report. The next
step will be to analyse the Data and
develop future options for Recreation plan-
ning. With further public input, a Master
Recreation Plan and feasibility study for
recreation complex will be drawn up and
presented to Town Council.
The next opportunity to give your view
and to review the results to date will be on
Thursday, December 11th, at 8:00 p.m.
when the Goderich Recreation Depart-
ment presents a "Meet The Consultant"
Open House. It will be held at the Goderich
Arena Auditorium with a format presenta-
tion between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m.. Drop in
then, to find out more, and enjoy some
mulled cider and shortbread cookies with
Recreation Board members.

be put into some potentially hazardous
situations as they raise money for their
school," the release continues.
For emphasis, the release includes a
copy of a nev<sclipping from the;otfawa
Citizen ( Oct. 16, 1986) which details a case
involving a nine-year-old girl who was sex-
ually assaulted while selling chocolate
bars door-to-door as part of a school fund-
raising activity.
Fundraising is, generally a result of the
lack of sufficient funding for elementary
-schools, according to the OPSTF. The
group has lobbied steadily for the past two
years to see the ordinary expenditure ceil-
ing for elementary pupils raised to at least
the same level as that provided for secon-
dary pupils.
"This is not the fault of the local school
boards but the historical policy of our pro-
,vincial governments. Clearly the tissue of
fundraising in our schools is a concern to
all parents and teachers, and requires fur-
ther investigation. The resolution that was
passed by...the Provicial Executive of the
OPSTF was made with the express intent
of reducing possible risks for our
youngsters."
The OPSTF—Huron members concur
with this intent and made a similar motion
at their Fall district meeting.
"Presently there is active support for
the protection of our children through ex-
cellent programs like Block Parents.
Possibly people should look at protecti6n
on.an even broader scale by contacing the
elected provincial representatives, seek-
ing their help in support of our youth ( and
future) by ensuring proper funding to
eliminate the door-to-door fund-raising.
The greatest gift we could give our
youngsters would be a guarantee of their
safety," the release concludes:
