X1''0 million annually
into worker training
BY JACK RIDDELL, M.P.P.
HURON -MIDDLESEX
For Ontario to compete on a world scale,
it must have a workforce that is trained to
be the world's best. A year ago, Premier
David Peterson promised to put in place a
contemporary skills training system as part
of a balanced economic policy for Ontario.
Now, Skills Development Minister
Gregory Sorbara has. announced Ontario's
Training Strategy, a bold new initiative
which follows on an extensive review of
'previous skills training programs. It com-
plements the successful Futures program
introduced by the Ontario Liberal govern-
ment as well as the apprenticeship system
of long-term training in traditional
industries.
"Ontario's Training Strategy doubles our
investment in the skills of our working peo-
ple by committing $100 .million annually,"
said Sorbara. This matches the funding
dedicated to Ontario's technological, scien-
tific and educational infrastructure through
the Premier's council. Over the next five
years, more than a million workers will
benefit from Ontario's new skills training
programs. •
Ontario's Training Strategy will increase
the participation of business and workers in
ongoing, work related training. It will help
CLINTON - The September meeting of the
Huronia Branch of the Ontario Humane
Society was held at Katherine McNight's
home.
The meeting was opened with the
secretary's report from the June 4 meeting.
Mrs. McKnight then passed around a sug-
. gested plan she had received from the head
office. They were quite elaborate for this
area costing about $100,000 and included a
separate area for a Veterinarian and
surgery.
It was decided that at the next meeting,
October 1, being held at Pat Jamieson's in
Bluevale, members would compose a letter.
to canvas the area for new or renewed
membership.
A Gund bear will again be purchased for a
Christmas draw.
Winners of the June draw in Newmarket
were: $10;000-- Margaret Costain; $5,000 -
° R.E. Deane; $2,500 - Lynda Kadey; $1,000 -
Marion Blair; $500 - Laura Irvine and Nor-
ma Lewis; $250 - Joyce Townsend and P.A.

make training and retraining a regular ex-
perience in the workplace. It will strengthen
the competitive position of Ontario in-
dustries. And it will nurture the develop-
ment of a training culture in Ontario worthy
of our outstanding traditions in education.
In the, past, little attention has been
directed towards the critical need to
upgrade and modernize the skills of the
employed workforce. This provides the On-
tario Liberal government with both an op-
portunity and a responsibility to
demonstrate leadership in workplace
training.
Ontario's Training Strategy makes train-
ing and skills development a planned
strategic investment that is essential to On-
tario's future prosperity. The training
strategy has five vital components.
Together, they will help Ontario maintain
its competitive position.
The foundation of the training strategy is
a professional training consulting service.
