Goderich II bantams advance
to WOAA final but lose to
strong Owen Sound team
The Goderich II Boys' softball team
reached the finals of the Western Ontario
Athletic Association Bantam division but
bowed out in two games to a strong Owen
Sound team over the Labour Day weekend.
In the first game, played in Owen Sound,
the Goderich II team got burned for three
runs in the second inning and then could
not get them back, losing by a score of 5-2.
Dan Crawford drove in both Goderich
runs and Mike Hurd pitched Sian solid inn-
ings striking out five Owen Sound batters.
In game two, played here in Goderich'~
the bantams got two -hit pitching from Tom
Taylor but the effort was not enough. The
Owen Sound team won the game 3-1 and
took the best -of -three series 2-0.
Steve Sturdy scored the lone Goderich
run on a single by Mike Hurd.
Over the season the team compiled a .500
record winning six, losing six and tying
one game. This gave them, along with the
Goderich I team and Owen Cntind. the nn-
/
portunity to play in the round-robin tourna-
ment to determine the two finalists.
Goderich II and Owen Sound emerged as
the finalists.
Coach Mike Russelo said he was very
happy with the way the taem performed
over the season and noted that the Owen
Sound team was a very strong one.
Team members were: Rob Dempsey,
Greg DeWinter, Bruce Beattie, Dan
Crawford, Tom Taylor, Mike Duckworth,
Scot Glew, Steve Sturdy, Mike Hurd, MIke
Rompf, Jeremy Denomme, Shawn Currie,
Jamie Habel, Mark Machon and Mike
Alcock. Both Dempsey and Crawford bat-
ted over .500 over the course of the season
to lead the team.
The team appreciates the help of
scorekeepers Karen Sturdy, Maureen
Hurd and Wendy Denomme, and the
assistance of Ray Hurd and Jerry
Denomme.

Sailors hold
tryouts, 25
vie for place
on team
The Goderich Sailors of the OHA Central
Junior 'C' hockey' league have been
holding tryouts for the past week under the
direction of coaches Dan Duncan and Dick
Madge.
The Sailors have had about 25 can-
didates vying for spots on the roster. The
coaching staff will get a chance to evaluate
the hopefuls Friday evening at 8:45 p.m.
when the sailors host the Hanover Barons
in an exhibition game at the Goderich
Arena.
The Barons have won..the league cham-
--pi,onship the last two years and are
favoured again this season.
The league has sh unk in size this year
from last season's !+i ', teams. The Kincar-
dine Kinucks folder at the end of last
season, and the Wingham Ironmen are
doubtful starters this season because of a
dispute involvingthe team executive- and
the Wingham Recreation Board, over ice
times.
This laves only the Sailors, Barons, the
Walkerton Blackhawks and the Port Elgin
Bears as definite starters.

Events continue at Sunset
despite poor weather conditions
The weather this month has been very
indecisive. Will it rain today or will the sun
,shine? Seems to be the most asked ques-
tion. Unfortunately, last week was blessed
with more rain than sun, but events at the
Sunset Golf Club continued as usual.
The mixed two -ball playoff was played
on Sunday with 18 holes of golf, pot -luck -
supper and prizes for everyone.
The, top three winners were "George &
Joyce Bolton, Joan & Bob McDougall and
Ruth & Ron Bushell. The overall Two -Ball
trophy winners will be determined this
week. -

keep golfing and bring those matches up to

playoffs.
On Saturday, the Sunset hosted the Ideal
Supply Tournament. Due to the rain and
wet conditions of the course, this event
became a nine hole event. Rick Sowerby of
Goderich was the winner of the day.
Just a reminder, the Men's & Ladies
Night Playoffs will be held on Saturday,
Sept. 20. Hopefully in warm, sunny
conditions.
