President. George Ellis was President and
Editor at that time.
A fighter for better things for Goderich at
that time and many years later was Ray
Robinson - some of his dreams have now
developed. He also fussed for the tourist in-
dustry - this valuable piece of business

being ignored and should be supe
by
the merchants.
Howard Aitken and Bruce Sully pushed
for more and better tourist attractions for
Goderich. The biggest attraction at that
time was our Art Mart in Couathouse
Square. Over the years the crafts have
helped fill out that great space around the
Courthouse and it is a great week of
entertainment.
From 1973-74 Dave Sykes was a• high
school kid just getting started (cute, too).
About 1970 or later Ron $haw was news
writer here, later Editor. His heart was set
on helping the Canadian Hunger Foundation
and was project development officer in
Niger, West Africa.
For two years he worked on a post -
drought development program building cat-
tle ranches and improving herds. He and
wife and family came back for a short time
and later joined the CARE program. He
then went to Bangladesh.' I don't know
where he is now!

disturber — but it's good for all of us.

Attitude - now that's a pretty important
word! Our attitude towards life - and people
around us, means a great deal in our way of
living.
You can either be stuffy and miserable —
can't see beyond the end of your nose, or you
can be bright and cheerful seeing good in
everyone — and big ;enough to not let the
bigots get you down. It's a great life if you
can keep up that attitude".
Recently, with friends we saw a big old
fellow in slippers - but only one sock. "What
happened to your other sock?" "I couldn't
find `it." "Why didn't you put on another
pair?" "Oh, I couldn't change - that's bad
luck, I looked under the bed but it had disap-
peared so I said to heck with it!"
He planned to put on another pair when he
took his bath - but he wasn't going to spoil
his luck! Now that.'s an attitude! P.S. The
lucky sock . was found in his bed but he
couldn't figure out how it got there.
It is like telling a child he's putting his
shoes on the wrong feet - and he just keeps
looking around - can't find any other feet!
As my grandaughter said "Gramma tell
me a memory." Now here's a memory - I
was trying to figure the date of my big pain-
ting of the Maitland Valley and Saltford
village. The official opening for the new
bridge was 1962. It took two decades to con-
vince the government that a new bridge was
needed. Early in January of 1963 a new mail
service was started and it was possible we'd

Early in the salt industry here - in this
area - Samual Platt produced lb tons of salt
a day - the hard way - by evaporation. •
In 1962 Sifto Salt was putting out over
80,000 tons a year. In '76 it averaged over
6500 tons a day. Also in '62 or '63, no. 2 shaft
was sunk in near record time to a depth of
1,835.6 feet. Wonder what is next?
In '63 the Hanover Shopping Mall was
started and they started to spring up all over
the place after that.
Twelve years earlier our town planners
had set aside the area west of Bennett St. to
the town limits. They were a pretty wide-
awake group.
That year the ice did a lot of damage all
around us and the Sifto Plant was in danger
at the river mouth.
Another goodie of '63. The tax rates was
held at 14 mills but soon after, upped
mills. The Signal Star became Signal Star

In the area of professional development
for nurses there are numerous courses,
clinical days and seminars. For many
nurses,these educational days seem quite
removed from the reality of their work ex-
perience. Being employed in highly
technical and under -staffed units, nurses
are left feeling frustrated, unappreciated,
and overworked. Nursing is a profession
that is forever changing, and, in order to
cope with those changes, nurses, as profes-
sionals, need time for personal growth and
development.
