Shut4ns enjoy Sun
BY SHARON DIETZ
Television coverage of the morning wor-
ship service at, North Street United Church
on cable TV is a "wonderful blessing" for
the sick and shut-in members of the con-.
gregation. No one enjoys the service more
than Clare McGowan since her sister, Ida
has been unable to attend service
regularly.
The donation of the television camera at
the church was made in recognition Hof
Clare's 15 year ministry visiting the sick
and shut-in members of the congregation
after her retirement from her career at
Family and Children's Services.
"It's really been a wonderful blessing,"
says Clare. "I never dreamed we'd have
anything like this."
"It's next thing to being in church," adds
Ida.
Clare says the televised church service
is very important to the sick and shut-in
members of the congregation because
many were very active in the church and
now that they are unable to attend worship
services, they miss their friends and the
sense of belonging to the community. The
televised church service also helps to keep
members informed about the activities of
the church.
Rev. Robert Ball says he receives letters
from the sick and shut-in who are grateful
for the service. It is enjoyed ndt only by
members of North Street United Church
but anyone who chooses to tune in to the
broadcast which is taped and aired at 1
p.m. Sunday afternoons.
Rev. Ball estimates there are between 30
and 40 shut-in members of the North Street
congregation.
The church purchased the television
camera, the VCR fo, the cable TV studio to
play the tapes, microphones and sound
mixers and built a sound boon in the
church. The congregation plans to pur-
chase a second camera to provide another
angle to the program. The one camera pro-
vides a static view of the minister and a se-
cond camera will pick up the
congregation.
It takes two volunteers from the con-
gregation to produce the program each
Sunday. One person on camera and
another to operate the sound boon. Plans

Clare McGowan, left, and her sister, Ida find the television coverage of Sunday worship ser-
vice at North Street United Church to be a real blessing since Ida has been unable to attend
service regularly. A television camera was purchased by the church a year ago to continue
Clare's ministry of visitation to the sick and shut-in of the congregation by taping the ser-
vices and broadcasting them on cable TV Sunday afternoons. (photo by Sharon Dietz)
Now, after a year of broadcasts, he is more
confident in the role. He must be careful
not to include announcements of specific
interest to the North Street congregation
since they may not be of public interest
and he is not permitted to solicit the con-
gregation for funds during the televised
portion of the service because Cable TV is
public telelvision.
are to train another cameraman to operate
the second camera and there is some
thought to having the words to the hyi'ims
displayed on the screen for viewers to sing
along.
Rev. Ball says being on television hasn't
changed his preaching style, although peo-
ple told him he was a little tense at first.
