The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-09-17, Page 5Consider folks "outsi dear Editor: Investigators from the office of the On- tario Ombudsman attended a meeting of a number of Goderich Township taxpayers. Many of them have endured the traumatic experience of having their homes broken in- to and suffered loss and property damage as a result of escapees from the Bluewater Centre in their frenzy to get out of the district by whatever means at hand. These harrassing experiences, as well as the ensu- ing reaction to the morale and subsequent devaluation of their property has left a very deep scar on the entire community. There were about 25 persons at this meeting, designed to simply convey to the ombudsman the basic facts and give per- sons, directly affected by the escape of eight -residents in less than a year, a chance to relay their feelings as they strongly feel their "human rights" i.e. to a peaceful way _of life, etc.; has been violated by the advent of this institution in their midst. Apart from the inadequate security pro- vided, the PARAMOUNT concern is the in- clusion of the new wing (now under con- struction) that is to house "rapists, murderers, and arsonists". This added risk as TOTALLY REJECTED by residents and tdaxpayers in the Township. Already folks are being approached by enterprising salesmen, offering burglar alarm systems for just a few hundred or housand of dollars. Some residents have resorted to having a loaded rifle at hand for rotection, others find a guard dog ensures little better night's rest, etc. etc. In fact, EDne young area boy, having heard of the Treeting, came up to me the other day and ,said: "I hope your meeting helped because !us kids aren't allowed to play in the woods zany more. I keep my sword by my bed at might, Sometimes I have nightmares". In n'fact, out of the blue he even suggested that tie would like to write a letter to the M.P.P. 'or someone to let people know that life isn't quite the same here any more. The elderly folk and retired cottagers are really afraid. One trailer park owner says that tourism has been affected and that pro- perty devaluation is indeed a reality. Where is it all going to end? Do we wait till some real tragedy occurs before more protective action can be implemented? The ombudsman offered several helpful • suggestions in response to many of the con- cerns voiced at this meeting that are being followed through. A future public meeting where all concerned residents and tax- payers will have an opportunity to express their views and proposals, etc. is planned in the near future. This is being announced -at a later date: Truly, we DO have legitimate reasons for our fears and infractions of the peace and tranquility of our homes. I AM concerned e We fenfence" LFTTEPS with the rehabilitation of the youth at the Centre, but if they had not posed a threat to society in the first place they would not be where they are. Hence, society also has a duty to the victims as well, a fact that seems to be sorely underrated in the course of justice. "In closing" as the preacher says: I would like to thank the "Former Employee of the Centre" for her observations regarding con- cern for "young offenders" outside the Bluewater Centre. This is indeed an alarm- ing situation and' as a grandparent I share your concern in this respect. Perhaps we ought to do some "coddling" OUTSIDE THE FENCE, i.e. provide improved sports facilities, craft & hobby programs, etc. similar to those extended to young offenders at the Centre. Prevention is better than cure. I am not convinced that the Centre with its A "distinction. made between Jesusand ..__ Jehovah Dear editor, The Supreme Court has recently ruled . that the Lord's Prayer be used in the open- ing exercises of Ontario's schools. Therefore we might well consider what is ;dealt with in that prayer. "Our Father": this would refer to "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 15:6) "Hallowed be thy name": ,modern translations read: "Let your name :be sanctified" (that is: set aside for wor- jship). So the question comes up: "What is Tthat name?" The name according to Psalm 83:18 id "JEHOVAH". At Exodus 6:2,3 in the King James version, we read: "And God spake :unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the _LORD (margin, or JEHOVAH); And I ap- peared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto (Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by , my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them." The Tetragrammaton, from which ,the name "JEHOVAH" is derived actually ;occurs in the Hebrew Scriptures 6,973 times, i and in the Greek Scriptures 237 times, mak- ing a total of 7,210 times the bible mentions „pod's name. Modern translations, unlike ,the King James, which substitutes "the -LARD" in most cases, uniformly render the name "Jehovah". ; When one vocalizes "the LORD" the `hearer is not able to distinguish, whether "the LORD Jehovah" is referred to or "the Lord Jesus". Thus the identities of these two superior Personages are confused. Jesus himself stated: "This is life eternal: to know fithee, the only true God, and the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ." (John 17:3). If we want our 'children to get life, then ;,they should he assisted to make a clear ,distinction between Jesus Christ whom God ,sent to earth as our Redeemer, and Jesus' ;Fattier JEHOVAH. Sincerely, Charles F. Barney tT minimal discipline, and pampering is ade- quate deterrent to crime amongst the young. We have "spared the rod and spoiled the child" too long. The observation that "the Centre and its occupants do not give cause for concern or present_ any form of danger to the communi- ty" (unquote) may well apply to the writer. However, it is cold comfort to those law- abiding, local residents who have been directly affected by the escapees. It is un- fair to accuse these people of "a poor at- titude of some to accept progress" (unquote). If concern for the welfare of folks OUT- SIDE THE FENCE is considered "not prac- ticing being Christian", it eludes me how the same writer can conscientiously refer to. prior residents of this facility as "the home for the crazies". A cruel attitude toward un- fortunate folk afflicted with mental illness or the mentally handicapped! Perhaps we should ALL pray for more compasssion and understanding towards ALL aspects of this current issue. Adieu!
