y is a chaxact-Rristic of Christian life
BY CAPTAIN WENDY JOHNSTONE
THE SALVATION ARMY
"My servants shall sing for joy of heart."
(Isaiah 65:14).
Do you ever feel as if every drop of joy has
been drained from your soul? One wonders
why people lose their joy. The song writer
exclaims, "Where is the blessedness I knew
when first I saw the Lord?" and the
Psalmist David cried, "Restore unto me the
joy of my salvation." So perhaps we ought to
try to discover what it is that can steal from
us such deep joy as that possessed by David.
Each of us has heard someone say, "I'll
forgive you, but I'll never forget." Resent-
ments become deeply buried; guilt builds
up, and the bubbling joy slowly sinks and
then disappears. There are many other
reasons why some fail to experience a deep
joy in their Christian living.
Perhaps it is a lack of faith in God. There
are those who are caught up in the pressures
of the surrounding world, the anxieties that
impinge on every -day living. It is tragaic
when such people fail to find the underlying
joy of the Lord which sustains us in all
circumstances.
Because we are human we can sense

Mothers in the home, coping with the
children, always giving themselves and
rarely ever receiving commendation as a
reward, often feel frustrated and devoid of
real accomplishment.
The Scriptures tell us that joy is one of the
characteristics of the Christian life. In Gala-
tians, ,ioy is included as a fruit of the Spirit.
Jesus prayed that His joy might be fulfilled
in the lives of His followers. That includes
you and me. If you would have joy, real joy,
wonderful joy, let Jesus come into your
heart!
