The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-07-09, Page 5cipinion Dear editor, Since you print letters from readers, I was this way. • I'm much better at expressing my thoughts Sincerely, Greg Gordon 41 Anglesea St. wondering if you could print this cartoon. and- OMA act like soiled 'kids Doctors Dear editor, What will they do _next, hold their breath until they turn blue? Just like a spoiled bunch of little kids, another doctor wrote the Signal -Star on June 25 about how misin- formed I. was and another letter was to listen to doctors and the OMA. I happen to be very well-informed but you still have no point, except that you didn't like my point, of view just because it's dif- ferent from yours,. I told the truth and didn't hide or cloud any issue. The facts seem to me to be that a debate 'was held on TV between Murray. Elston and Dr. Railton of the OMA. Elston made one very good case as• to why Bill 94 should be passed. Dr. Railton showed absolutely no case in his favor. Railton let all the doctors down for his poor showing. The .news said Elston won and Railton. lost. So I and the the public listened to the .OMA which was a,bad move on your part. Long waiting lista have nothing to do with Bill 94. The doctors restrict the number of doctors that are allowed to practice in On=, tario. It .seems if we had more doctors, the waiting lists wouldn't lie so long. • The waiting lists are long enough now because a small amount of the doctors are on strike. You force the poor woman in the nursing home to wait even longer. What , does she have to do with Bill'94 unless her doctor extra -bills? LETTERS • The accessibility issue goes back to the number of doctors that are allowed to prac- tice in _the province. More doctors means more accessibility. The OMArestrictions and the government bungling are responsible, not the public but they're the ones who always suffer and you profit at the people's expense (only those that extra -bill, not the responsible profes- sionals who proudly wear the name doctor and try their best to help all people, not just the rich.) The extra -billing doctors only have themselves to blame for Bill 94. The answer was simple, just talk to the few that extra - bill and Bill 94 would have gone away. But no, they had to push and shove—so, Bill 94. On TV we all see doctors running around Peterson, screaming in white coats. They look like people that have escaped from a ,. rubber room, .not doctors. Dr. Railton didn't give •ine one bit of infor- mation.or the doctors themselves as to why I should take up their fight. I don't see any point that you have tried to "mask the only issue—money and that is all Bill 94 attacks. Your information must come from a place Doctor's attitude towards politicians is disappointing Dear editor, I have read the several articles con- tributed by or reported on Dr. Mario Cauchi, however, there. seems to be little response from readers on the pros and cons of his •complaints. In order that he not assume that public apathy extends -to all Goderich ,..-residents, let me state .my views. I am a recent resident of Goderich and shortly after arriving my wife suffered a severe case of poison ivy rash. On attending the hospital for treatment she was advised that Dr. Cauchi was the only doctor accep- ting patients and subsequently attended his office where she was advised he extra - billed. She had no choice in the cir- cumstances and accepted. In addition to the billing,) she was prescribed, not from a pharrnacy but, from the doctor's dispensary, pills and cream as treatment at a cost of $15. The same prescription was supplied at a British hospital the following week at $5• with free doctor's examination. I wrote to the Ontario Ministry of Health • • inquiring why, as an OHIP contributor, I could not be supplied with a doctor. I was advised by the minister and the College of Physicians and Surgeons that a doctor had been found who would accept me witmn the ' plan. I later attended that doctor and was advised by him that while accepting me. he still reserved the right as a businessman to introduce extra -billing in his practice any time he felt it necessary. To date I remain a patient of that doctor, however, had he in- troduced any • additional charge, I would again have complained and demanded at- tention under OHIP. • While the doctors consider the new legislation an intrusion on their right as businessmen, nobody considers the OHIP Contributor. We didn't and don't have a choice. We didn't and don't • have input on what premium we pay or what doctor's fees will be, or the option to opt in or out. Doctors ' are in the enviable position of negotiating their own contract within OHIP. , Do doctors ever consider that patients feel as if th ere robbed, -not of dignity, but of money. As for resigning from hospital committees, it smacks of conflict of interest and perhaps the board should remove hospital privileges. - Bill Egan Goderich , Reader co•mmend•s• column on municip,• • Dear editor, I would like to commend Elsa Haydon for her recent article entitled, "Why Bother? Focus. on Municipal Participation", which appeared in the Focus on June 14, 1986. It was most informative and made very in- teresting reading. I 'highly recommend everyone to read it, especially if you are at all interested in how your local elected of- ficials function. It is easiest to go with the flow and not 'make any waves, especially if you are in- volved with a system that does things `• . Dear editor, • Susan Hunde"rtmark's column_ j "Everybody's an expert about diets" was right on the mark. Too many women follow bizarre eating habits in search of a body shape that is abnormally thin and not very beautiful. I am glad to see, articles such as Susan's that cut through the brainwashing • and get to the heart ofthe matter. i. Women need to accept themselves as they Doctors aren't p • from page 4 ryj blackmail in. some_ eire'utnstances, as .„ described in The Globe and Mail on Tuesday. " f have no difficillty with th fact that our s actors are trig highest paid professionals. Someone has to top the list and the doctors because "that's the way we've always done it". It takes a strong person to go against this kind of philosophy. Do we not have any strong people on county council? - I always felt that ' you could trust your local government to know what they were doing. Now, I'm not so sure. I think it's high time a wave came over Huron County and brought us up to date. ' Sincerely, Shirley Chalmers, BScN. Public Health Nurse. County of Huron. Column addresses diet and body. shape • are, aiming for a weight that they can realistically maintain while stilleating in a healthy way. Eating sensibly may not make them the skinniest on the street, but it will leave them with a healthy, §trong body that will allow them to do the things they want to do in life. Please tell me how I can get a Mercedes Benz on 50 cents an hour even working 24 hours a day. All of my information comes from radio, TV and the paper so I think I am very well- informed and can look at both sides fairly. I would like to help the doctors but the facts • say I can't, so I have to suppor the government. 0 • " Show the public something responsible and realistic, not that money is the root of all evil. Closing emergency wards, threaten- ing to close hospitals — the doctors can't win my support andwhy should the government give in to those tactics. The people yob say ' you are trying to help are suffering even more because of the strike. The doctors' case has no merit at all pro- ven by their own words in the paper arid ac- tions on TV. The whole population of Ontario didn't fall of the turnip truck yesterday. We read and can hear both sides, not just one. People are not misinformed. •• T.A.
