The Goderich Signal-Star, 1986-06-18, Page 25Spirts Competitors displayed various throwing styles and mixed reactions ,`fir..) to their results at the Horseshoe Pitching; `l'ourna ment in Goderich on the weekend Horseshoe throwers pitch in to make first annual meet a success BY PAULHARTMAN The Goderich Horseshoe Pitching Club hosted its first annual tournament on Saturday, June 14, at the Goderich Legion, and with 61 participants in five different classes, it proved a rousing success. It was the first time a major tournament had been held in Goderich since 1978. Alonzo Harburn, a Welburn resident, took home the 'A' singles title, narrowly edging his son, Doug, who was awarded the 'B' singles title... In doubles play, Laverne Hoagey of Brodhagen and Jack Ward of Monkton, walked away with the 'A' doubles cham- pionship. George Coughlin and Wilson Martin, both of London captured the 'B' doubles title. 'A' and 'B' singles and doubles were combined. The winner got the 'A' trophy and the second -place finisher received the 'B' trophy. Harold Carter and Alex Boa, , both of Goderich, were the top throwers in the 'C' doubles category while Lorne Elliot and Fred Harburn of Staffa won the 'D' doubles title. Claudette Elliot of Staffa won the Ladies division. • Winners wen e 0.e -seated with i pp acs, donated prizes and money received from entry fees, by tournament organizers Ken Sheerer and Dave Parks. The tournament was held in the parking lot behind the Legion and throughout the day a number of interested spectators turned out to catch the action. The Goderich Horseshoe Pitching Club hopes to soon have a permanent pitching site where tournaments can be staged and players can practise. The club would like to invite anyone who is interested, to come out and throw some shoes on Monday nights from 7 pm till dark and Wednesdays 10 am till noon. Everyone is welcome, but young people are especial- ly encouraged to test their skills. Duplicate Bridge Club plays nine table game on June 10 SPORTS SHORTS On Tuesday, June 10, the Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club played a nine table Mitchell game. Jean Papernick and Louise Hether- ington finished first in the North-South division and first overall with a score df 108 points. Mary Donnelly and Eleanor Erskine Were second in the North-South division with 102 points. Mary -Ann Dempsey and John Woods were third with 94.5 points while Marion Lane and Barb Howe were fourth In the East-West division, Joanne Gilchrist and Lee Ryan finished first with 96.5 points: Two teams tied for second place with 86 points. Helen Gardiner and Audrey Tobin were fourth with 73.5. In action from last week, Marion Lane and Barb Howe captured first overall with 139,5 points. Second in the East-West division were Mary -Ann Dempsey and John Wood with 128 points. Dawna Sproule and Marg Hall were third while Edna Overholt and Don Godley were fourth. In the North-South category Aelian Weerasooryia and P.K. Venkiteswaran finished first with 127.5 points. Mary Don- nelly and Eleanor Erskine were second, Norm Cowal and Lorne Walters were third and Nuala. Conlan and Verna Worthy were. fourth. The nine table Mitchell game was under the direction of Eleanor Erskine. The Quarterly Club Championship will be played on June 17 while President's Cup action will go June 24. a 'ka?:ate+':/0 I',s' x., Horseshoe pitchers offer congratulations to each other Area teams compete in local slowpitch tourneys Sifto wins Little Dianne Leddy of the Go-for-Ettes sends the ball on the way to the plate in Slowpitch action on the weekend. Sifto Salt went Undefeated to win the women's division of the Little Bowl Tourney. (photo by Paul Hartman) The Second Annual Little Bowl Slowpitch Tournament was held at the Agriculthral Park on June 13th and 14th. Eight men's and seven women's teams from Goderich, Clinton, Auburn and Lon- don participated in the tournament. In the women's division, Sifto Salt went undefeated throughout the tournament to take first place. The strong defensive play as displayed throughout the tournament by Sifto was the key to their 3-1 victory over Samuelson's in the championship game. Alice Stinnissen had a strong tour- nament on both offense and defense for the winner, while Allison Graham was outstanding on defense and offense for the runners-up. In the men's division, last year's cham- pions, Nissan, lost their first game to Nile. Bowl Slowpitch and then won the next four games to reach the final, outscoring the opposition 47 to 23. Meanwhile, Nile went undefeated through three games to reach the final on the strength of their strong defense and ag- gressive play. To win the championship Nissan had to defeat the Nile teaman twice. In the first game, Nissan jumped early lead and shut down Nile's offense to post an 8-^ victory. The final game saw Nissan jump out to a 13-0 lead by the fourth inning and then Nile, led by the clutch hit- ting of Paul Kerr, battled back to tie it 13-13 in the seventh. a Glenn MacCuspey, who had played strong game,,, scored the winning run for Nissan in the ninth inning. Mark Lassaline had an excellenttournament for Nissan hitting on 16 of 22 trips to the plate. Hully Gully Motocross on the weekend Motosport Double Header Weekend kicks off Saturday, June 21st at Hully Gul- ly with the second house league motocross event of the 1986 season., This event will feature all amateur classes and free ad- mission on Saturday afternoon. Sunday, June 21st the track will be changed into an ATV style. A free pancake breakfast gets underway from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. 'i'he ATV's will int tile trach at aloud with racing at 1 sharp. This event will be sanctioned by the Ontario All Terrain Vehicle Associates. Mitchell wins tourney with 10-8 victory over Hodges Milling The Dungannon Agricultural Society held its 9th annual Slo-pitch tournament on the weekend, June 13 and 14. This year, it was played as a true double knock -out for men, aged 30 years and older, with 10 teams playing. Teams • taking part were: Carlow, Mitchell Cardinals, Port Albert Bulldogs, Winthrop Warriors, Hodges Milling, Monkton Oldtimers,, St. Helen's Farriers, Goderich Mosquitos lose season opener Chryslers, Atwood Huskies and Kingsbridge -Nile. Four games were played Friday p.m., June 13, and play continued throughout Saturdall. The two teams who played off for the championship were Hodges Milling and Mit- chell Cardinals, with the result being a solid win of 5-0 for Mitchell. However, thhlsamQeea9 t Goderich Mosquitos kicked off their season with a close 5-4 defeat to St. Colum - ban in Goderich last Tuesday. Forwards Donny Rivers and Drew Macaulay scored two goals each. Centre - back Jamie Redmond turned in a strong defensive effort. The Squirts travelled to Seaforth last Tuesday and lost 8-3 to a fast, skillful and disciplined team. Powerful centre -forward Mark .Johnston scored all three Goderich goals and was the lone offensive threat. The defense was, at times, non-existent, and only left -back Tim Powell and right - half Willie Lomas showed consistent hus- tle and desire. Junior C Slowpitch, Boat Race a go for tweekend This weekend in Goderich is again shaping up to be a busy one. On June 20, 21 and 22 the Junior 'C' Slowpitch Tournament will be held at Agriculture Park. As well, on Saturday and Sunday, the Port Huron to Mackinac Race begins at the Goderich Harbor Breakwall.
