BY REV. CLARE GEDDES
BLUEWATER CENTRE
This great English political writer Ed-
mund Burke once said, "All that evil re-
quires to triumph is for good men to do
nothing." Often good people facing evil may
feel they can do nothing either to prevent it
or check it.
The least they can do is to become angry
about it! From this anger may flow the
strength and courage to combat evil
sucessfully.
Those who protest that it is unchristian to
become angry would do well to consider
seriously St. Matthew 21: 12-13: "Jesus then
went into the temple and drove out all who
were buying and selling in the temple
precincts; he upset the tables of the money-
changers and the seats of the dealers in
pigeons; and he said to them, `Scripture
says, "My house shall be called a house of
prayer"; but you are making it a robber's
cave."' (NEB)
What are we to make of this outburst, this
account of an angry Christ? Did Jesus slip
out of character here? Did he "lose his
temper" to become more human than
divine? Does it reveal an impetuosity in him
which, had he lived longer, he would have
learned to curb? These questions reveal our
woeful lack of appreciation of the place and
power of righteous anger.
Two negative things about human anger
need to be said. First, anger is not power or
strength in personality when it is uncontroll-
ed force. Second. anger is not power when it
is ethically misdirected' - when it attacks
villains rather than the villainies they
perpetrate.
Having said this, however, we should not

lose sight of the stimulating power of clean
anger. The son of man with a whip of cords
in his hand, and evil cowering before him -
that is a Christian symbol too, as God-given
and as much a revelation of the divine
nature asihe cross on which he died.
Clean anger gives boldness` to the tongue

against the economic and social slavery of
apartheid. Clean anger gives boldness to the
tongue of concerned folk throughout Canada

. Wanted: angry Christians! Christians in
Huron County angry enough to speak out on
behalf of the farm families being pushed off
their farms by high operating costs and
grossly unfair produce prices. Your anger
may.- cost you in the form of higher food
prices and higher taxes, but anything wor-
thwhile has a price tag.
Anger is not always the opposite of love.
-Often it is love's clearest. expression. Evils
thrive right under our noses, grow brazenly
insolent to every plea for decency and
justice because Christians do not get angry
enough to speak out and to act against them.
Wanted: angry Christians!
