Individuals and families form the sound basis for international peace BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK International peace will only be achiev- ed on a sound basis when individuals and f-milies behave, think, decide and act ill a peaceful manner, Carol Bowie told close to 30 people at a public meeting in Hohnesville entitled "Dialogue on Peace." • "If you wish to support peace, wage peace instead of waging warlike methods. You have to see the benefits of working for the light instead of protesting against the darkness," she said. Bowie, a member of the board of coun- cillors of the Baha'i faith, spoke along with Df. Jim Hollingworth, of Goderich before the National Film Board's "If You Love This Planet" was shown last Thursday night. She told the group that while peace is in- evitable, the people of the world must decide how it will a j ive at peace—through the suffering and hour of nuclear war or through conciliation and world government. "Both processes are at work in the, world today but there's an encouraging number of individuals who have a strong desire to bring about world peace. We're beginning to recognize we have all the machinery we need to bring about the kind of world we have in our dream of peace," she said. ' The first obstacle we have to overcome to bring about peace is our belief that human nature cannot change. "We all have the desire for peace but when we scratch the surface of desire, there are things we don't want to change in ourselves," she said. Dr. Hollingworth said the best way to work for peace is to first empower ourselves and to place our personal dream of peace above all dreams. Unless we can in- dividually and collectively make it come true, all other dreams will perish." He said he keeps his dream for peace focused by meditating daily and choosing from the world's religions' ancient wisdom to nuture his dream. He also works for causes or activities that give his life meaning so that • his dream will have more power. And, he talks to others and writes to politicians regular- ly about working towards global peace. "I even write to (Soviet Union leader) Gorbachev once a month and tell him about the good work he's doing towards. peace. He may not be reading it but so- meone is so I feel hopeful that someday I'll get a reply," he said. Dr. Hollingworth said he first got involv- ed with the peace movement five years ago when he heard, peace activist Dr. Helen Caldicott speak. Prior to that, he was in favor of U.S. President Reagan and his policies. "That shows you what kind of a tur- naround is possible," he said. He said he's appalled by statistics that , last year's annual' budget for armaments around the world was $800 billion, more than half of which was spent by the United States and the Soviet Union especially when one child dies every two seconds from malnutrition and two billion people in • the world have no safe drinking water. "Science and medicine now has the power to eradicate such suffering. They can use that power to build weapons of destruction or ease the suffering. The choice is reality. And, we wouldn't have to spend $800 billion to stop the suffering; we could do it for a fraction of that amount," he said. The massive denial by people who feel the nuclear arms race is too much for them to deal with is one of the • big pro- blems of the peace movement. Most people have all sort of rational arguments for not making their protest heard, he said. "I've often fantasized about the ordinary people who were around when Hitler was doing his work. In some ways, they allow- ed that man to do his stuff while they denied they couldn't do anything to change what politicians were doing." "Could it be that we're contemporaries of these people?" he asked. Dr. Hollingworth said it doesn't matter that medicine can transplant•hearts since even that activity exists under the nuclear threat. It said it's also impoxtant,„that people recognize the darker side ,of,.tbemselves that they project on their enemies, especially at an international level. "One country's a devil and one's an angel. Governments use this so they can muster the tax dollars to produce weapons. We must call ourselves and our leaders on our own projections," he said. He added that individual people can work towards peace by sending personal letters or telegrams to politicians, join peace groups and support other like- minded people. "We need to give encouragement to dreamers. We who are dreamers have to get support from co -dreamers," he said. "Without the dream, there is no future for our children or our children's children and p1an&Earth will die. As'Jonathon Snell says, a ask not for personal sur- vival. We ask that we be survived."'
