Stratford edges Goderich to win
Sixth Annual Oldtimers' Championship
Stratford came out on top in the Sixth
Annual Goderich Oldtimers Soccer Tour-
nament held on June 7.
Six teams participated, each playing
five games of two twenty minute halves.
The Goderich team, ably coached by Sid
Hall, started well by beating Anchor Bay,
Michigan,2-0' �

in a 1-0 win for the Goderich team.
The third game against Stratford started
well with Goderich taking the lead on a
goal by Brian Allen. The lead was main-
tained until mid -way through the second
half when an unfortunate handball occur-
red in the Goderich goalmouth. Stratford
was awarded a penalty kick which they
successfully put into the net to tie the game
1-1.
The game ended that way, so a penalty
shoot-out took place, with Stratford winn-
ing. The goal by Stratford was the only
time anyone scored against Goderich in all
five games.
Goderich then had an easy 6-0 win over
Saugeen. Harold Refflinghaus scored four

game. At this point, Stratford had won four
and lost one, Kincardine had ' won all four
games, and Goderich had won three and
lost one. Goderich needed to win for a
chance•at the championship.

Now Kincardine, Stratford and Goderich
were all tied at four wins and one loss. But
Kincardine was eliminated because of goal.

championship. Stratford won it, with
Goderich the runners-up.

This weekend, June 13 & 14, the Dungan-
non Agricultural Society will be sponsor-
ing its 9th Annual Men's Slo-pitch
Tournament.
However, therze are a few changes in the
format of the tournament this year: First,
only senior players are eligible to play.
Therefore, all men must be 30 years of age
or older by June 13, 1986.
Secondly, the number of teams involved
is expected to be 12 instead of the previous
number of 16 teams. This means that the
-length of the tournament has been shorten-
ed from 3 days to 2 days, Friday and Satur-
day, June 13 and 14.
Otherwise, the tournament will follow
last year's pattern.
Entry fees are $100 per team while win-
ners receive $500, a trophy and mugs.
Runners-up receive $400, a trophy and
mugs.
The "Star Spinners" will be playing for a
free dance on SaturdaY night from 8 p.m.
to 1 a.m. During the evening, the awards
will also be presented in the hall.
Come and enjoy some great ball and
some super fun this weekend in Dungannon.
Bombers nip
Raiders 1-0
in Squirt soccer
In Squirt Soccer House League action
last Wednesday, Bombers defeated
Raiders 1-0. Centre -forward Mark
Johnston scored the lone goal.
In the second game Giants beat
. Bombers 1-0. Inside -left Matt Hunter was
the scorer. After two weeks of play Giants
hold a two point lead over Bombers and
Raiders.
Tourneys make
weekend busy.
It will be a busy weekend for sports en-
thusiasts in the area June 13. and 14.Bcg

Tournament, there are two other events
scheduled for Goderich this weekend. The
Goderich Legion will be hosting a horseshoe

pitching tournament on SaturdaY, June
14.
The Little Bowl Slow Pitch Tournament will
take place at the Agriculture Park on Fri-
day and Saturday.

Corriveau paces attack with 3-4 night
SherwoodLake thumps Orioles 8-3 to first
This week a full slate of games were
played in Goderich Industrial Fastball
League Play.
Last Monday Sherwood beat the Orioles
8-3 and Kirkey's beat the Juniors 8-2.
The Orioles had taken a 1-0 lead to the
third inning before Sherwood struck for
two runs on three hits. In the next inning
Sherwood got three more for insurance
and added three more before the game
was finished. The. Orioles attempted to
comeback as they scored twice, late in the
seventh but that was all they could put
together. Ron Corriveau went 3-4, Al
Sygrove and Pat Frayne each went 2-4 in
leading the offensives attack. rkey Pitcher

Terry Johnston gave up Y
struck out seven in leading his team to the
8-2 score. Bob Orr went 2-2 and a walk and
eight different batters scored a run in the
victory•
On Tuesday, all the scoring was done in
the first inning 'as Goderich Tire edged
French in a close, very exciting 3-2 game.
Dave Gallow and Glen Falkiner reached
base on errors and Terry Austin then nail-
ed a triple to the fence to account for all
scoring. The triply was only one of three
hits that losing pitcher Don Bogie would
give up that night. John Bogie pitched just
as well giving up two runs to French by Del
Mitchelmore and Brian Mackenzie. John
Bogie was also involved in the game sav-
ing play. With men on first and second,
, George Sutton drove one back straight at
the mound. The ball bounced off of Bogie
and right to second basemen Mike Ryan.
To follow this game would be a hard act
to follow but Hayter's and Denomme's did
exactly that. The two teams traded run`s in
the first and stayed close right to the last
inning with- Denomme's protecting a 6-5
lead. In the top of the seventh Denommes
struck for three runs and it looked like the
game was over. But as they say 'it ain't
over till its over' and Hayter's cameback.

wood had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom
of the sixth. Hayter's scored the four runs
on two walks an error and three hits to
earn the name of the comeback kids for the
month of June.
The other game featured the second
meeting between French and the Juniors.
French got off to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of
the first and never looked back. The score
ended up 5-1 for French as Jim Martin

On Sunday, June 8 Sherwood got back on
track with a 5-2 win over Kirkey's. The day
looked'promising for Kirkey's as Paul Kel-
ly, the first man up, belted the pitch from
Sy Langlois . over the right field fence.
Langlois allowed only four more hits after
the home run and he struck out s
But it was the Juniors' night for their
first win as the offense exploded all over
Hayter's Pitcher Phil Petrie, beating
Hayter's 9-7. The Juniors scored three in
the fourth and another tewiin the e fifth led too
put the game away.
Juniors with a double and a triple with two
RBI's in an onslaught of eleven hits. Scott
Stoll,, Grant Langlois, Brent Williamson,
Pete Nivins, Lonnie Doherty, Mark
Ducharme and Duncan all scored awns for
the Juniors.
Squirt boys
fastball team
wallops Ripley
The Goderich Hi -Way Squirt Boy's
fastball team scored eleven runs in the
sixth inning to blast Ripley (32-4) in action
last Monday.
Sam Hosack and Jamie Stanley led the
way with 4 hits apiece in the Goderich
attack.
On Thursday, Goderich thumped
Lucknow 16-4.
Bill Ingham pitched a strong game,
while also getting 2 hits himself. noderich
scored 10 runs in the third inning to take
the leader on their way to victory.
Hully Gully
to host Safety
Clinic June 14
On Saturday, June 14th, at Hully Gully in
Varna, a Dirt Bike and ATV Riding and
Safety Clinic will be held.
If you own a dirt bike or ATV you won't
want to miss this event. Topics covered
will include, riding gear and safety tips,
pre -race preparation, inspection of bikes,
clutch adjustment, brake adjustment, etc.
plus a few little secrets manning.
Parents are recommended to attend a
short maintenance clinic designed
especially to show them how to direct and
help their child in maintenance and
protection.
Participants will be given on -track in-
structions, starting with walking the track,
picking out the best line, and discussing
alternate lines for changing conditions,
starts and braking drills andjumping
all
techniques the safe way,
be
covered.
Registration will take place from 8 am -
8:30 am. Clinic participants who are under
the age of 18 must have one of their parents
present at registration. The clinic will get
underway at 9 am sharp and will end at ap-
proximately noon.
The opening House League race will
follow the clinic, at 2` pm rounding out a
complete day of training, activity and fun
at Canada's friendliest, most complete
motorcycle and ATV centre. Total cost, in -
