The Goderich Little Theatre's production of the Neil Simon comedy, "Barefoot in the
Park", was delightful says Signal -Star drama critic, Susan Hundertmark in her review of
the play, which featured Margaret Hill, Don (Rocky) Rivera and Philip Main in starring
roles. (photo by Sharon Dietz)
Barefoot in the Park was
an eveningof entertainment
BY SUSAN HUNDERTMARK
Goderich Little Theatre's production of
Barefoot in the Park Thursday night was
delightfully funny and wonderfully acted
and directed: _. .
Neil Simon's play about the first apart-
ment of newlyweds with a six -day-old mar-
riage has much charm today"as it did
when originally written in the 1960s. A few
lines, however, are dated -by -the sexism of
suggesting that a happy marriage is only
possible. when the wife takes care of her
husband and makes him feel important.
Margaret Hill sparkles as the en-
thusiastic young wife, Corie Bratter who's
determined to make ashowpiece out of her
fifth floor walk-up apartment even though
there's no bathtub and a closet -sized
bedroom.
Bubbly and adventuresome, Corie
wastes no time setting up her mother,
played by Joyce Kuran, with the middle-
aged playboy Victor Velasco (Michael
Watts) and proceeds to have a much better
time on the double date than her mother or
her patient but practical husband, Paul
,(Philip Main).
Hill is especially entertaining as a tipsy
Corie who wears Velasco's Russian hat tip-
ped over her eyes and suggests she and her
husband run through the building knocking
on doors and yelling "Police."
Joyce Kuran is lots of fun as Mrs. Banks,
the nervous but obliging mother who
swallows pink pills like candy. Kuran's
facial expressions say it all when her
character is exhausted from climbing the
five flights of stairs, is playing the long-
suffering mother and is secretly delighted
at compliments by Velasco.
Philip Main does a good job as Paul, the

practical young lawyer who makes six
cents on his first case. He's a witty
grumbler who who algn has a hard time on the
stairs especially when he's carrying Mrs.
Banks ep J.he .five flights after several
glasses of Ouzo, a Greek liquor.
He's hilarious when he's stinking drunk, .
sick from a cold and barefoot after walk-
ing barefoot in the park to show his wife
how adventuresome he is.
Though he seems to have a little trouble
with his accent (which wavers from Scot-
tish to German), Michael Watts is enter-
taining as the exotic and lecherous Velasco
who says he's at the awkward age of 58
since dirty old men get away with More.
Dashing and a little bit dangerous,
Velasco is the catalyst to which all the
other character's react, often hilariously.
Both the telephone repair man (Don
Rivera) and the delivery man (Douglas
Palmer) take their humor from the ex-
hausting climb to the apartment. Rivera is
noteworthy with his goofy manner and
Brooklyn accent.
The setting, a small bachelor apart-
ment, is well -constructed with a cleverly
designed window ledge which the eccen-
tric Velasco creeps across to his attic
apartment when his locks have been
changed.
The broken skylight which lets in the
snow, is also cleverly done, suspended
from the ceiling of The Livery stage.
And, it's easy to imagine the long flight
of stairs to be climbed as characters yell
down the stairwell to warn their visitors of
the exercise they should expect.
Goderich Little Theatre's Barefoot in the
Park was an evening of great entertain-
ment and a showcase for the talent for
comedy possessed by local actors.

Safety is a particular concern to approx-
imately 50 Hunter Education Instructors
from throughout southwestern Ontario
who met recently to discuss, update and
improve upon their efforts to ensure that
hunting remains a safe and enjoyable
sport.
The meeting was held at the Hullett Pro-

by the Ministry of Natural Resources in
conjunction with the Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunter (O.F.A.H.).
Following the we *ming cofrunents by

provided by Dave Ward, Aylmer and Vite

According to Conservation Officer,
Blake Evans, who is in charge of the
Hunter Education Program for Wingham
District, "It was felt that the Hunter
Education program, having experienced
great success throughout the years could
be further improved by the establishment
of effective lines of communication among
fellow instructors and between instructors
and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The interest and dedication of the instruc-
tors was shown by the excellent atten-
dance and the numerous and varied ques-
tions and comments regarding Hunter
Education in Ontario."
A highlight of the workshop was the
presentation of Twenty-five Year Service
Awards to instructors by the Ministry of
Natural Resources for their dedication and
contributions in- the field of hunter
education.
