Camp experience ff victims:.,
A unique recreational and therapeutic
summer holiday program will be run for in-
dividuals in Ontario who have Huntington's
disease ( HD) . Two week-long camps will
take place in Ontario - one at the Five Oaks
Centre in Paris ( August 16-23), the other at
Villa Loyola in Sudbury ( August 10-1.6 ).
Programs for the campers will include
swimming, music, exercise, day trips and
evening entertainment.
The holiday program provides an opppor-
tunity for recreation and mutual support for
the campers. Sharing feelings and ex-
periences with other patients reduces the
painful isolation felt by many affected by
this disease. Discovering they are not alone
in their disability is one of the highlights of
the holiday program ( and often the year)
for. many of the participants, As well, the
program provides a much-needed break for
family members caring for HD patients.
"Last year's campers still keep in touch
with each other and plan activities together
throughout the year. This is one of the big-
gest benefits of the program," says Lois
Courtney, Director of the Five Oaks Camp
and Coordinator of the Toronto Huntington's
Disease Resource Centre. ,
The Toronto Resource Centre, the first of
five in the country, was established by the
Huntington Society of Canada to support pa-
tients and families coping with Huntington's
disease. Its ongoing services include
counselling and referral for those affected
and their families as well as consultation
and inservice programs for professionals.
The Centre's current activities include a
weekly Day Activity Program and a Drop -
In Program for people with HD, family
outings and support and discussion groups
for patients, spouses, those at risk for the
disease and caregivers.
Huntington's disease is a hereditary brain
disorder whose symptoms usually first ap-
pear between the ages of 30 and 45. Its symp-
toms, which become progressively , in-
capacitating over the 10-20 year course of
the disease, can include extreme involun-
tary jerking movements of the head and
limbs, slurred speech and decreased mental
capabilities. Each child of an affected
parent has a 50:50 chance of Inheriting the
gene which causes Huntington's disease.
May is "Huntington's Disease Awareness
Month" in Canada. Its purpose is to educate
Canadians about this cruel disease and its
devastating consequences.
The Huntington Society of Canada was
established in 1973 and now consists of near-
ly 50 self-help chapters •

His attention to detail was uncom-
promising and the work reflected both his
artistic ability and a good measure of
patience.
His dedication and intricate workman-
ship did not go unnoticed by the panel of
three judges who ,awarded Verge two
scores of 38, and 37 out of a possible 40
marks.
But, while the actual sculpture com-
manded hours of precise workmanship,
the mirrored base also commanded atten-
tion as cleanliness was emphasized.
"It took me at least four hours to clean
the mirror before the show," he explained.
"Just one fingerprint on the mirror could
mean the difference between a gold and
silver medal.

It was 12 years since Verge had attemp-
ted to enter a sculpture in the competition
and this year he thought he might "just as
well give it a try." `
Considering his gold medal performance
at this year's show, he concedes he won't
get away with another 12 year absence.
"I will have to go in the show next year
for sure."
