People forego necessities
to fin;. ce doctors' second
cars, says concerned reader
Dear Editor,
Concerning last week's letter which coin-
pares today's doctors to persecuted jews, I
would like to remind Doctor Watts that it
was members of his profession who were
responsible for -snitch, experimentation, tor-
ture and death that took place in the Nazi
concentration camps.
It is doctors' power over life and death
that frighten most people to passively ac-
cept the social conscience or financial
demands doctors make on an individual.
How many people forego necessities or dip
into their weekly or monthly savings to help
finance the doctors' second car?
Some doctors feel "full billing" (depen-
ding on whose fees you feel are justified
O.H.I.P. or O.M.A.) is a right in a com-
petitive society.
That would be true if the profession was
competitive, but if you consider the O.M.A.
limits the number of doctors allowed to
practice in the province and also the
number of students allowed to pursue this
profession, then what you discover is that
the province is really dealing with an elitist
union. There arc, i iin' ' ' r ^i.ne*i••nre nri-
waiting list hoping to practice in Ontario
because they believe Ontario is a good place
to work.
I feel some doctors are jeopardizing
O.H.I.P.'s future and it is getting to the point
where I can no longer differentiate between
today's health care or health care during
my youth when my father bought Blue
Cross.
You still have to purchase your own in-
surance if you can afford it and if you don't
have insurance you don't get treated. (Try
getting treated without an O.H.I.P.
number) .
O.H.I.P. was created to provide medical
treatment of equal value to all walks of life,
but all it is now is a guaranteed rate for
doctors.
I would like to remind doctors what free
enterprise is all about. The biggest
challenge to running your own business is
collecting your own fees. I challenge doctors
to go it on their own without the O.M.A. or
O.H.I.P.
Let's see who can stand the competition.

Reader says extra -billing
is red herring in dispute
Dear Editor,
In your Apr. 2 edition, Jack Riddell.
M.P.P., made a couple of very interesting
statements. The first was "People in On-
tario and across Canada worked to build a
medicare system of which we can be pro-
ud", and the second; "The quality of our
health care system in Ontario is, without
question, as high or higher than any other in
the world." - 4
With these statements I, and I am sure
most of the people of Ontario agree. What I
cannot understand is the justification for
putting the whole system in jeopardy by
blowing a relatively minor item out of all
proportion.
You say the system is the greatest, so let's
leave it that way and forget the "red herr-
ing" of extra billing.
Is it possible that t -the Liberals were
caught between a rock and a hard place?
They made pre-election promises very free-
ly, never thinking that with the help of the
NDP they would form a government. Had
they been given a working majority, the
question of Health Care Accessibility would
very likely been pushed to a back burner.
- It seems, however, that the NDP are rul-
ing the day, and if the Liberals wish to stay
in power, they have no choice but to follow
the direction of their socialist associates.
It has been reported that only slightly
over one fifth of health care costs are paid to
mg A„ pai.

medical practitioners. If only an estimated
12 per cent extra bill, a relative small dollar
amount is in question - less than 1 per cent of
total billings.
If accessibility is really a problem, there
have to be better ways of correcting it than
throwing our whole system to risk. If as Rid-
dell says our system is the greatest, let's
keep it that way !
Yours truly,
E.B. Goldsmith
