On Saturday, Apr. 12, the G.ID.C.I. Vocal
Jazz Ensemble and the Vocal Combo, Jazz -
vox, travelled to Oshawa to compete in the
All Ontario Vocal Jazz Festjyal and return-
ed home with gold standard and silver stan-
dard respectively.
In all, there were 27 choirs competing, 12
in the Vocal Jazz EnseMble category and
Eight in the Vocal Combo section. Unlike
most competitions, the competing schools are
ranked according to national level standards.
Gold standard is "outstanding, reaching ex-
cellence in all areas of performance and
silver standard is "very good work. which is
definitely on track of excellence with no
noticeable weaknesses".
The two adjudicators, both top flight pro-.
fessionals '- Dr. John 'Trepp of Vancouver
and Jerry Novak the noted American com-
poser and arranger, praised the quality of
the G.D.C.I. groups hr, all areas: blend -
balance, color -texture, precision, dynamics,
interpretation -phrasing, swing concepts and
Jazz excitement.
In the marking system, 10 is perfection in
every area and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble
scored 16 and the Vocal Combo 19. The large
group performed Seems Like Old Times, My
Funny Valentine and From This Moment
On. The smaller group sang Route 66, I'll Be
Seeing You and Tuxedo Junction.
Both groups are directed by Eleanor
Robinson who was lauded for her fine work.
One oLthea_djudfcators commented that she
was "leading the way in Western Ontartp.

Sally Van Osch, Pam Fritzley, Murray
Lane, Mark Rittinger, Brad Milburn,

In addition, there was an all star choir of
15 selected from among almost 300 com-
petitors and Craig Wark was chosen for the
tenor section - a great honor.
The highlight of the competition was the .
awarding of invitations to compete at the
National Finals in Vancouver on the Expo 86
grounds May 14-18. As gold, standard win-
ners the G.D:C.I. Vocal Jazz. Elnsemble was
invited along with schools from Oshawa, St. '
Catharines and Waterloo. As well they will
be performing as part of Expo 86's enter-
tainment during their stay. • '
The group has been working on fund rais-
ing since October to raise the $12,000 they
need to travel t the competition. To 'date
they have raised about $8,500 through sing-
ing and their monthly sale of pizzas and
panzerottis and would like to thank the com-
munity for its generous support. Indications
are that their goal will be met.
This trip marks the third time that the
G.D.C.I. Vocal Jazz Ensemble has been in-
vited to compete at the nationals - an ex-
cellent tribute to these talented students and
their director.
