Last week, when a 51/2 year-old native In-
dian girl sat up in bed at University Hospital
and eagerly devoured a bowl of her favorite
breakfast cereal, it marked an auspicious
occasion for the teaching hospital and its
staff.
The young Manitoban, a girl who, suffer-
ing from tuberculosis and rickets, was aban-
doned by her natural parents early in life
before foster parents lovingly provided a
home, became the first pediatric liver
transplant patient at the hospital.
The youngster battled back from her ear-
ly childhood ailments only to fall victim to a
severe liver disease that threatened her
young and fragile life. death
As day after agonizing day passed,
was imminent. Without a liver transplant,
her condition dteriorated rapidly. By Easter
Sunday her condition was critical.
As a story on the front of the community
section details, a young child in Alberta fell

on the family farm and suffered severe head
injuries. Technically, the
g theildwas bra n
n
dead and through
senselessness of the sudden tragedy the
family agreed to donate the liver of their 21/2
year-old child.
The surgical team from London battling
time and the odds, flew to Calgary, retriev-
ed the .organ and with the aid of police
escorts raced to the hospital where
he
tranpslant was successfully completed.
Minutes were critical and the team had
precious few to spare.
The story was offered by Bill Brady,
general manager of CFPL radio, founder of
Transplant International and a member of
the hospital's board of directors, as an il-
lustration of the miracles that are occuring
in our hospitals.
Naturally, the life-saving miracles de-
pend upon organ donations and the untimely
deaths of others. People are being urged to
unselfishly transcend their immediate
tragedy and think of saving the life of
another person.
Brady called it a situation "about giving
i
and serving -the greatest achievements of
the human spirit." While organ transplanta-
tion has become one of the most dramatic of
health care advancements, the success rate
has almost relegated the procedure to the
status of ordinary.
We tend to become complacent about our
own achievements but the fact of the matter
is that a critical decision must be made by
family members before that miracle can
take place.
There is always a need for organs from
young children because, as Brady points
out, it takes a tragic death to occur before
the prospect of donation can be entertained.
In the case of the sudden death of a child,
it is difficult for hospital staff and doctors to
approach parents with idea. But it must be
done to save the lives of small children bare-
ly into life.

While a family grieves for a. loved one, it
seems more than insensitive to ask that they
consider donating their child's organs
Brady said too many families are being
denied an opportunity they would readily
consider and even submit to. Only once the
pain is gone, do families rationally consider
a donation.
Organ donation has become the gift of life
and stories of families who have wiped away
their tears of despair and willingly helped
others, are compelling ones. Imagine how
those unselfish families feel knowing theirlie
decision helped to prolong a young
Knowing that fretfuli parents somewhere
were quietly , but euphorically, offering
thanks. Knowing that part of their child
would live on.
Organ donation is perhaps a subject that
everyone has to give a measure of con-
sideration and commitment to today. It
could save a life.
Tax forms still too complicated
It's that time of year — big T -time. Those who haven't thrown in the towel by lugging all

He is probably the only person in Canada who is.
It isn't that the Revenue Canada experts are stupid, or ill-informed. The trouble lies with
the tax form. It has become too complicated. Indeed it borders on being incomprehensible.
Instead of taking another look at Revenue Canada's telephone service, Mr. MacKay
should have his department simplify the form—at least to the point where his own experts
understand it.
