Bicycle thefts
BY SHARON DIETZ
Bicycle thefts and thefts from unattend-
ed vehicles continue to climb reported
Chief Pat King at the April meeting of the
Goderich Board of Police Commissioners.
King said 11 were reported stolen this year
so far with nine being reported since
March 17. Half of those bicycles have been
recovered.
Last year 141 bikes were reported stolen
and another 20 were collected by police
who contacted their owners. This was a
dramatic increase from the year previous
when only 84 were stolen.
Chief King said of the 141 stolen in 1985
23.6 per cent were stolen from the four
schools in Goderich with as many as 19
stolen from the high school. Five bicycles
were stolen from the arcades, 73 from
private residences and nine from The
Square.
' Thefts from unattended vehicles have
risen from 56 in 1984 to 70 in 1985. Forty-

past ten years:

Of course, past performance is no guarantee of
future results, but it is an important factor to
consider when deciding the best way to make
your money grow.

prevented if the vehicle had been locked.
Only two were broken into. There have
been 19 thefts from unattended vehicles
this year with nine occurring in the last
month. Only four of those thefts included
something stolen from off the car as oppos-
ed to in it, said Chief King. Only one vehi-
cle was locked.
Articles stolen include a briefcase,
radios, tape decks and cassettes, tools, a
gun, a flashlight, sound speakers, a fire ex-
tinguisher and fishing tackle.
Incidents of willful damage continue to
average a couple each week, said King and
include scratched cars and the firing of B
B guns..
In other business the commission has
decided to negotiate the police chief's
salary pursuant to the Police Act rather
than having the police chief negotiate with
the town council as in the past.
The police chief has been awarded a 7.5
per cent increase which -takes his salary
from $38,148.62 to $41,000 a year.
