CLARE GEDDES Have you ever seen a friend caught up in a heartbreaking situation and said to yourself :,"There but for the grace of God go I"? What do you mean by "grace"? How do you understand it? Like the word "love", "grace" is hard to pin down, to define precisely. Of course we know what it means – until we have to spell it nut! St. Paul gave us a clue when he wrote: "For by grace you have been saved through. faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God— not because of works, lest any man should boast" ('Ephesians 2: 8-9). In this context "grace" means "God's unmerited favor. Shown to mankind in Christ". Paul elaborated on this meaning and clarified it beyond a doubt by adding, "and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God— not because of works, lest any man should boast". 11ea};ly, we can do nothing to earn or to deserve salvation; it' is "the gift of God". ("To be saved" refers to the same spiritual experience as "to inherit eternal life" (Luke 18:18)) and "to enter the kingdom of God" (Luke 18:25). In'anothler passage St. Paul seems to con- tradict his teaching on "grace" when he wrote: "...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (Philippians 2: 12b-13). The contradiction disappears, however, when we understand that the words. "with fear and trembling" mean "humbly and with constant dependence on G'od's help". If only we believed in God's grace, in His "unmerited favor shown to us in Christ", how much frenzy would disappear from our• lives! Gone would be our frantic efforts to • pile 'up good deeds so as to merit or°to'earn God's favor. Gone also would be our fierce and constant drive for "independence" — to make "our own way in the world", "to sink or to swim entirely on our own". Early in life we all get the message that if we are going to succeed — in school, on the /Swoito) cren DENOMME FLOWER SHOPPE INC. Phone 524-8132 DAY OR NIGHT Agent for 24 hr. Somehow it is better to be fiercely independent than to be obligated to anyone. We seldom question this teaching; we simply adopt it into our system of belief and operation. Insidiously, it soon colors our endeavours in all areas of "life. Even as Christians we find ourselves striving sincerely "to work out our own salvation" quite independently even from God himself. And so we guarantee our own failure. Until we learn to work out our salvation "with fear and trembling" we will never succeed. Only by striving humbly and with constant dependence .on God's help will we enjoy a full and wholesome relationship with God or with anyone else. As we learn to depend on God we will also learn to be "interdependent" with others. We will learn to risk depending upon others; to risk having others depend upon us. Even Christians do not always like the risk this.iil1- volves. The risk of deep disappointment. The risk of being hurt. The risk of being manipulated or used. Yet even here the grace of God can help us. "Grace" also means "God's enabling presence andower". Here is the link bet- ween grace arid faith. For me, quite simply, faith is "betting my life there is a•God" — the God revealed in Jesus Christ. For me faith involves risk. But, it is a risk which grace, "God*senabl- ing presence and power", helps me to take. The sure knowledge that I do not risk alone, that by his presence God will give me the power to accomplish what he wants me to do, gives me the courage to risk and to dare. So when we face a heartbreaking situation in our lives we' can count on God's grace — not to help us to avoid it — but to wrestle creatively with it and to overcome it, and not be overcome by it. Like St. Paul, we too "can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4; 13). Milford Bay family visited forEaster On Easter weekend there were many visitors.
