Sports
The Goderich Elevator slowpitch team hosted a mixed volleyball
tournament at GDCI Saturday and a number of area teams com- .
peted in the one -day, round robin affair. Each team in the tourna-
ment played at least three games. In the above photo, -a defender
got turned completely around in an attempt to get his hands on a
shot and right, Mary Lynn Willis extends her body to the limit in an
effort to block a shot at the net in an afternoon game. (photos by

Track team competes at York meet
The G.D.C.I. Indoor Track and Field
team competed in the Central Technical
Schools Indoor Classic held at the Metro
Track and Field Complex at York Univer-
sity. The forty Goderich athletes were
among the nearly 2000 athletes competing.
Ray Bedard kept the school's shot put-
ting tradition alive by winning the senior
boys shot put with a personal best put of.
14.75 meters.
Jeff Boyce won the midget boys 60 meter
hurdles at his first meet. His time was 9.3
seconds.
• The Goderich female sprinters also kept
their tradition going with an excellent
showing.

He had a game -high total of 14 points for
the Vikings. Black had 10, nen five and
Barwick four.
Pearen had 12 points for the Panthers,
another tribute to Graham and Bal wick's
defensive effort, and Mike Clarke had 10.
The Vikings bench -did not see much ac-
tion in the playoffs; but 13aird Robinson,
Juergen Schulz, Andy Swan and John
Empson gave the Vikings the depth they
needed to go through the long season
without losing. '
The Vikings reached the finals by
defeating the Seaforth Golden Bears here
last Tuesday 48-37 in sudden -death semi-
final play. Todd Graham had 14 points,
Darryl Black had 12, Dave Almasi and Bob
Barwick had eight points a piece and
Travis Bell had six.
The Vikings will . play in the WOSSA
"AA" tournament at Strathroy and Arva
this weekend.

Collinson and Joanne Campbell placed se-
cond in a time of 1:52.4. The Midget girls 4.
x 200 team placed fifth in a time of 2:02.3.
Team merhbers are Jennifer Culbert, Jen-
nifer Cunningham, Maureen Stapleton and
Pam Fritzley.
In the 60 meter sprints two girls made
the finals which is quite an .accomplish-
ment. Joanne Campbell placed 'sixth with
a personal best time of 8:05E in the senior
sprint and Erin Robinson placed fourth in
the junior sprint final with a personal best
of 8:30E. Krista Collinson made it to the
semi finals in the'midget 60 m sprint.
Our middle and long distance runners
also competed very well. Christin Phillips
placed second in the senior girls 6300
meters with a time of 11:55.9.
In the 1500 meter run Tim Connelly plac-
ed fifth in the midget race (4:51.9) and
Jennifer, Cunningham finished fifth in the
midget girls race (5:24.7)•. Shane Worsell
set a personal best time but failed to place
in the top six.
In the 800 meter run midgets Maureen
Stapleton and Jennifer Cunningham ran
well. Stapleton was 4th (2:35.5) and Cunn-
ingham 5th (2:38.4) .
Bob Pellow placed third in the midget
boys high jump.
Many other Viking athletes competed
well but failed to place with the large
number of entrants.
Goderich Duplicate Bridge
Club holds membership night
Mary Ann Dempsey and Mary Donnelly
finished first with 34 points as a three -table
Howell movement was played at the Feb.
10 meeting of the Goderich Bridge Club.
Marg Hal and John Wood were second with
27.5 points and Nuala Conlon and Anna
Godley, third, with 26 points.
A seven -table Mitchell game was played
Feb. 11 and the average score was 84. Jane
and Brian CEre were first overall and in
North-South with 104.5 points followed by
Mary Lapaine and Louise Hetherington
with 101.5 points.
Nuala Conlon and Evie McDonagh were
first in the East-West section with 91.5
points while Betty and Ray Fisher were se-
cond with 91 points.
The teams of Marg Hall and Archie
Hamilton and Betty and Ray Fisher tied

Joanne Gilchrist and Lee Ryan were
first overall with 86 points and were follow-
ed in the North -South section by Eleanor
Erskine and Mary Donnelly with 84 points
and Jane and Brian Cere with 74. •
Marg Hall and John Wood topped the.
-East-West section with 85 points while
Arlene Gibbons and Theresa Doantis
finished second with 76.5 points.
