Lew Brown of Burgessville, Ontario, has
been a hunter 'and nature enthusiast for
most of his 60 years.
During these years, he has seen a lot of
changes in the outdoors he loves. He has
seen wetlands drained, natural forests
,,removed and recreational opportunities
reduced as private land is posted against
trespassing.
One thing he has never seen is a eastern
bluebird, and that bothered him. He knew
these coloriful little birds were once a com-
mon and welcome sight across southern On-
tario.
rntario. But the spread of cities, modern farm-
ing methods and nesting competition from
starlings - which were introduced by people
- has combined to drastically reduce their
numbers.
So Brown and his hunting club decided to
do something about it. And the Community
Wildlife Involvement Program (CWIP) -
sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources -- helped thein do it. '

back the bluebirds. They applied for, and
received, assistance through CWIP to make
1,000 bluebird box kits, and handed them out
in September at the 1985 International Plow-
ing Match, south of London, Ontario. That •
way thdy could publicize the plight of the
birds and give rural residents an opportuni-
ty to get involved. It also gave them a
chance to chat with farmers and improve
the image of hunters in an area where ac-
cess'to land for recreation h. as decreased.
The respdnse at the plowing match was
overwhelming, '
"We couldn't give them away fast
enough," says Brown. "Everyone. asked for
one, including the Minister of Natural
Resources 3 .
The club members also asked llli'downers
to report any bluebird sightings so they can
pass this information on to the ministry.
