erich rinks advance in Playdowns
One ladies' and one men's team have ad-
vanced to the Southern Ontario p Y
ns
in the National Forester Curling
Playdowns as a result of last weekend's
competition at the Maitland Curling u
b
in Goderich.
Six men's teams and three women's
teams took part in the weekend e
with teams from as far away as Peter-
borough and Oshawa taking part.
The six men's teams played a round-
robin schedule, and the final game had the
Tom Cullen rink from Peterborough facing
Cam Bogie's team from Goderich to
decide the over-all winner.
The game was close throughout, and the
large crowd on onlookers were treated to
some fine shooting and strategy
throughout.
In the critical sixth end, with Bogie
leading by two, Cullen tried a very difficult
tap -out around a guard to try and take two,
but his Shot rolled just off the rings and he
was -able to take only one.
In the seventh end, Bogie had to draw
the tee -line with his final stone to store
one, putting him two up coming home.
Cam's strategy of keeping the ice clean
gave him some trouble, and when Cullen
came to shoot his first rock he had a
chance to bury one behind a guard.
However, his sweepers seemed to fall
asleep and left his rock just short of the
rings. Bogie had only to draw in for two,
and the Peterborough rink could not score
more than one. Final score was 6 - 4 for
Bogie.
Playing with Cam Bogie were Jim Bell,
Rodger Moore and Jack Kellough.
Bernice Moore and tier team of Vickie
Culbert, Laurie Pacquette and Betty
Moore won the Ladies event, defeating
Brantford 8 to 6 and then Peterborough 9 to

Kellough and Rodger Moore follow the stone. Nine Forester teams •competed in the two-day
round robin bonspiel at the Maitland Country Club on the weekend. Bogie's rink won the
event and will compete in Brantford. The other member of the winning foursome is Jim

Competition
MONDAY -NIGHT INDUSTRIAL
Like the Thursday Industrial league, the
Monday night group is fast becoming a
highly competitive league. A play-off
between the respective champions will be
a likely consequence in thehear future.
Last Monday, Jan. 30, Jack Kellough's
Bank of Commerce team, with wife
Muriel, Gail Falconcer and Carey
Sclepens took an early lead and went on to
defeat "Chief" Lassaline and his Firemen,
9-4.
Vicki Culbert and her Roadrunners,
( Patty McManns, Emily Crew and Lynn
,Edward) had a close game against the
Worsell team, but managed to come from
behind and win 6 - 4.
Helen' Dickie, her husband Don along
with Don MacEwan held the upper hand
against Karen Kirk and her ladies team,
defeating them 8 - 6.
The closest game of the evening saw Ed
Mundle's Magee squad take a one -rock
final end victory frog' ,the Garret team,
skipped by fill-in Doug Bundy. The game
was tied coming home, but Ed was able to
make a perfect last -rock draw to take the
game 7 - 6. gd's teammates were Dan
Durst, Jim Finnie and Marlowe Austin.
THURSDAY NIGHT INDUSTRIAL
In the seven o'clock draw, the Local 1863
Union team played it close to the vest,
were tied coming home and managed to
steal two on the last end to edge Jeff Har-
rison and his Super -Shell team 5 - 3.
Jack Kellough, skipping the Legion
Team had little difficulty in handing the
Maitland Golfer's their eighth loss in a 12 -
4 contest.
Charlie Crawford imported "Sugar"
Meriam to help his team, but even though
Charlie missed very few shots, his luck
was against him and George Sutton scored
a couple of big, ends to take the game 10 - 3.

Both teams will now advance to the
Southern Ontario finals on March 8 and 9th
at the Brant Curling club in Brantford.
Best of luck to both teams from all your
fellow curlers down at the Maitland!

ON THE
ROCKS
at the Maitland
The Sifto Salt team, under Mark
Fischer, held their own for most of the
game, but 'eventually bowed under the
pressure that John Orr's Health Unit team
put on them, losing 7 - 5.
At 9 p.m., the big game that the spec-
tators were watching was the game
between Cam Bogie's Foresters and Bob ,
Dempsey and his Hospital team. Cam
came through as usual, and defeated AM &
G 7 - 3 to remain undefeated after eight
rounds.
Dave Cloet took over the GDC1 Teachers
number two team, and showed his shot-
making ability by handing the Lady
Foresters an 11-i!shellacking.
Dan Durst and his Viking Veterans
didn't take too kindly to being challenged
by the upstart Viking students, and taught
them a lesson in shot -making, defeating
Mark Jeffrey and his fellow students 12 - 3.
This keeps the Viking Vets in sole posses-
sion of second place with a 7 and 1 record.
