Close battles highlight curling action
up, leading two coming home, but fate, a
few stray straws and some erratic shooting
by everyone, from the lead right up to the
skip, allowed Dan to pick up three on the
final end and win 6-5.
The other Teachers' Team, skipped by
Bill Garrow, had little difficultry downing
the Silver Brooms 16.1, while the Super Shell
team of Jeff Harrison's made similar short
Mork of the Evaporator team, 10 to 3.
The Maitland Sports, skipped by Nancy
Nephew, brought the Victoria and Grey
team down to rth .}sickly, trouncing them
12-4. /
After three weeks of curling, the Health
Unit team is the only undefeated rink, with
seven other teams all bunched up at two
wins and one loss behind them.
There are two more games before
Christmas, and George is planning a special
"High -pocket" draw for the 20th, in honour
of LaurieLs twins!
By DRB
The third week of Industrial curling at the
Maitland Curling Club featured some of the
closest battles since the league began, with
several one -rock decisions in the eight
games played Thursday night.
The classic match -up of previously
undefeated teams, had Ron Klages and his
Health Unit team pitted against Cam
Bogie's Forester foursome.
Klages won the toss and the advantage of
last rock in the first end, an advantage that
he planned to keep throughout the game. He
purposely blanked the next six ends! On the
seventh, a couple of misses allowed Cam to
steal one, but Ron still retained the last rock
on the eighth.
He sawrhis strategy pay off, and with the
hammer he made two difficult take-outs to
count two and Din the game by the unheard-
of low score of 2-1. Congratulations to his
team of Laurie Pacquette, John Orr and
Shirley Fisher, who kept the chase -the -ace
crowd in awe of their shot -making!
Three other games on the nine o'clock
draw were all tied coming home and were
won by a single point!
Jim Bell's Garb and Gear teams defeated
the 1863 Machinests 6-5, and the Elementary
Teachers scored the final point against the
Hospital foursome with an identical 6-5
score.
In a crowd -pleasing final end, that saw
two opposing rocks biting the button behind
cover and some valiant attempts to either
remove or guard them, Gerry
Riseborough's Maniacs finally edged out
Cathy MacDonald and her Forester Ladies
8-7.
In the 7 p.m. draw, the only close game
was between Doug Bundy's Teacher Team
and GDCI Vikings, skipped by former stu-
dent Dan Durst.
The Teachers thought they had it wrapped
