The Goderich Signal-Star, 1984-11-21, Page 7f GQDEi ICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1984—PAGE 7 Special education classes for teachers BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE There is a group of teachers in HuFon and Perth Counties that have been working on their own professional developiXient for almost 10 years. They are the special education teachers or those teachers previously -known as. the "opportunity class' teachers. They meet several timesyear as the Huron and Perth Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. The main purpose of the council, explains f • chapter spokesman, Pat Jones of Upper " Thames Elementary School in Mitchell, is to is `'.'help keep special education teachers up-to- date in their professional field. , However, Ms. Jones does state that the CEC offerings are for more than the special education teachers. Christmas is approaching rapidly, as was evidenced by this Goderich PUC worker, who was found busily decorating the Square for the upcoming festive season. (photo by Patrick Raftis ) Christmas wreath-makjng course offered The first snowfall of winter has reached this area and brings with it thoughts of Christmas. Many people make an effort at this time of year to decorate their homes for the festive season. The Goderich Recreation Department is sponsoring a how-to course, in making Christmas wreaths. The course consists of three two-hour classes, to be held November 27, 29 and December 4, at Dixies Flower Shop, starting at 7:00 p.m. For information, or to pre -register for the program, visit the Recreation office, 100 McDonald St., by November 23. Members will serve term At 'a police commission meeting held Monday, members Alvin McGee and Dave Gower said they would 'both be willing to be re -appointed to two-year terms on the commission when their present terms end on Januaiy 1 and February 14, respectively. Mayor Eileen Palmer, commission chairman, said a letter would be sent to the solicitor -general requesting that these re- appointments be made. She said she felt that the present commission worked well together and still had one issue to see through to completion. In other business, it was decided to call for tenders to replace the old police cruiser, a 1983 Chev. Ms: Jones notes that there is a parent group called The Association for Children of Learning Disabilities in,$tratford. The Huron -Perth group has been together since 1975 and includes teachers from the two public school systems as well as teachers from the Huron -Perth Catholic system. Prior to '75, the individual boards had their own councils. The teachers pay a membership fee, whichmostly covers the cost of the speaker to belong to the organization. "rlr0 need to keep informed," says Ms. Jones, noting that the council was originally,. formed before PD days existed. She says it is now recognized that regular classroom teachers are dealing with a wide range of children in their classes and they need to know how to deal with the ranges. In a hypothetical situation, a Grade 5 class could have children ranging from Grade 3 to Grade 8 in intelligence. On top of that, with the introduction of special education or Bill 82, a child with special learning needs can be in a regular classroom. "Teachers don't teach one 1 sson,"' says Ms. Jones. Currently a vice -p incipal, she says teaching is now a "di erent ball game" from the time she ata ed as a classroom teacher. "It's better, but harder than when I started. It's much more rewardi g," she adds, "But there are miles to go yet." The next council meeting is scheduled for Nov. 28 at the Jester Arms in Stratford. The consulting psychologist, for both the Perth Board of Education and the Huron -Perth Separate School Board, Dr. Charles Pierce of New Hamburg, is, the guest speaker. A. panel discussion on special education will be the thrust of the. April 24 meeting slated for the Little Inn at Bayfield.
