Or family records on which you don't have any information? Or are you a member of a Women's In- stitute compiling a Tweedsmuir history? If you can answer yes to any of the previous questions then Paper Treasures is for you. Perth County archivist Jim Anderson said in recognition of Ville province's bi- centennial, the Ontario Heritage Founda- tion is sponsoring various events. This weekend, from Friday, Nov: 2 to Sunday, Nov. 4, OHF is holding its first archival festival at the London Gallery. "It's aimed squarely at the man on the street," said Mr. Anderson of the archival festival. The main purpose of the festival is to "raise public awareness of archival material and preservation", said the Perth archivist. He notes that to the ordinary man who. purchases artwork at an auction, the actual picture is tossed aside while the frame is kept. Now, says Mr. Anderson, if these buyers did a little detective work and discovered some of the history of the pain- ting it could be valuable. Also old papers, whether they be family documents, business papers or factory records, they are valuable. This is where Paper Treasures steps in. Besides exhibits from the Ottawa and Toronto archives as well as area archives, the three-day show will feature demonstrations on how micro filming is done,- how paper is made, how books are bound and the do's, and don'ts of storing records. In fact, Mr. Anderson said staff from the Stratford -Perth Archives will be giving a demonstration on how to properly prepare a scrap book. Other features of the archival festival will be an assessment booth where personal treasures can be evaluated. There will be workshops on how to protect photographs, church archives 'and how to start a family tree. Mr. Anderson said registration forms for these workshops can 80 YEARS AGO There was a public meeting in the Court House on Monday evening to discuss mat- ters in connection with the proposed Alexan- dra Hospital, but • particularly to decide whether the hospital shall be built on lots on Wellington Street, or a building be purchas- ed to be turned into a hospital. On Wednesday, 14 men working for Con- tractor Pigott on the railroad, left their work and started for Montreal on foot. As soon as they left work, the contractor charg- ed them with obtaining money under false pretences and with deserting their employ- ment. The men were then rounded up -and put in jail. The town by-laws should be enforced and people stopped from driving their horses and buggies through Court House Park. A fine or two would be a deterrent. Tuesday night or early Wednesday morn- ing, there was an attempt at burglary at the Huron House. 50 YEARS AGO The new town well at the power house "came in" on October 24 and to celebrate the event, the fire department tried out their apparatus to see how the pressure would be affected. Peter Croome, local Bell Canada manager, said the introductory pages of the phone book have been redesigned, giving the public a fast and easy reference for all kinds of telephone information. Drawings, bold -face headings, white space and symbols are used to make each section of information stand out. "We expect people will find it easier to locate and read information in the introduc- tory section because of the new format," said Mr. Croome. "One part deals with customer service, another with finding numbers, local and long distance calling and a final one with the federal rules which govern Bell." The introductory pages also point out that there are no longer three free calls a month for residence customers who call directory assistance for telephone numbers that are listed in the directory. be picked up at either any public library or archives office.
