Lively garnes at local Chess Club
Several strong and lively games were
played at the Chess Club last week.
Ben Stadelman's top spot is being hotly
contested by Watler Gottschalk, and players
in"level 2 are jockeying for position; Brian
Brindley scoring two wins to secure him a
place there.
Fine games were played by Eric Hallam,
Robert Nau and John Crawford. Barry Page
was elevated into level 3, with victories over
Pierre Chagnon and Mike Cox. Doug
Brindley and Gerry Ross split a "double-
header" and Bob Dick played a noble game
with Owen Moriarty. The club's newest
member, Dave Brown, showed great pro-
mise; and we invite other newcomers to
share a challenging evening by calling Doug

On October 20 the 8th annual Swiss Team
Tournament was held at The Livery in
Goderich with Mrs. Scattie Church of Barrie
directing. Twenty-one teams took part in the
event and a London team placed first
overall. The Goderich team of Jutice Frank
Donnelly, Perey Sheardown, Lee Ryan and
Joe Nicholson placed third overall. Teams
participated from Brantford, Collingwood,
114 - Judge uochrane, Bill Schaefer.
East - West: first, Barb Howe, Marion
Lane - 144.5 pts.; second, Dawna Sproule,
Mary Ann Dempsey - 135.5; third, Archie
Hamilton, Tom Eadie - 129; fourth, Jean
Cook, Auleen Curry -123.5.

noon duplicate bridge at 1:30 p.m. '
Goderich snowmobilers do well
What began as a cool day ended up with
hot competition at Hully Gully as the first
Snowmobile grass drag race of the season
was run off. Over 100 entries from all over
Ontario competed on the eight -mile grass
drag strip at the Varna facility at speeds ap-
proaching 90 miles an hour.
Everything from the crate stock
machines right up to. the wild 130
horsepower fire -breather of Al Schmidt of
Gadshill was represented. Spectators were
out for some hairy, all-out racing.
ATCs were also featured in the grass drag
competition along with a snowmobile water -
skimming competition across the Hully Gul-
ly pond. The next Sno-cross and Grass Drag
will be held in mid-March.

Bowlers battle for position in leagues
If you have noticed that your league has not been written -
up in the paper this year, it is because the association has
decided on a different format for the articles. In order to
get more people involvedin the sport of bowling, we would
like to see someone from every league do the write-ups. for
his or her particular competitors.
If you are interested or know someone who might be,
please contact .Jerry Rivett or Little Bowl and we will give
you all the assistance we can to get you started.
FIVE PIN BOWLING
BACK ON TV
As they did last year, the Bowling Proprietors Associa-
tion of Canada and Carling O'Keefe Sports are sponsoring
five pin bowling on national television.. Last year our
representative was John Miller and he went on to
distinguish himself and Little Bowl very well.
This year the house ruund was held on Sunday, October
28 at Little Bowl and Ant Burt carne out the -top qualifier.
Art rolled an outstanding 2743 10 -game total to average 274
for the day, This score was obtained without the benefit of
handicap and if Art can keep it up, we will likely see him on
CBC in January.
Kevin Rumig was the runner-up with a fine 401 game and
a total pinfall bf 2516 pins. The top lady bowler was Karen
Pounder with a total of 2409. Marl Moore was second high
lady with a total of 2136.
MONDAY NIGHT MEN
The battle for first place, between French Cleaners and
Murphy's Landing came out in favour of French this week
as they defeated Murphy's 20 - 10. Bob Mills was the top
bowler for French with three match wins arid aa717 triple.
Al McDonald won two of his matches to keep Murphy's in
the running.
The Poverty Pak spoiled the chances for Sehnger-Wood
to take over top spot as they took 19 points of 30 in their
match. Jim Carrick rolled a 600 on the nose to lead the Pak
Carson Milley was top bowler for Selinger with a 647.
Dave Million came out for the first time this year and
rolled a 280 single to help the A Team take a 19 - 11 win over
Jghn's Jokers. Doug Brindley was the most consistent
bowler for the Jokers with a 618 on the night
Little Bowl, led by Gerry Ross with a fine 846 triple. got
back on the winning track as they took a 22 - 8 win over the
Tail Ends. Dennis Schmidt was top roan for the Tail Ends
with a 590
MONDAY NIGHT LADIFS
Auleen's Angels were really 00 a roll, as they took seven
points frorF''the No Names High roller for Auleen's Angels
was Brenda Dineen with a 28.3 single and a 607 triple Ann
McCartney had a high single of 247 for the do Names. while
T)el Geddes rolled a 621 triple
Manonettes took seven points from the Old Tuners, as
Manlyn Bannister led with a 216 single and Ila Williams a
triple of 571 High rollers for the ()Id Timers were Melba
Maillet with a 228 single and a 578 triple by Nancy White
Trouble took seven points from Shirt's (;iris, as Karen
walker had a big night, rolling a 2.5a single ana a Jse triple
Dorothy Bourdeau led Shirt's Girls with a 246 single and a
577 triple
Blazers took five points from the Captain's Kids. as
Joyce rianuuon rolled a 221 single and a 582 triple. Deb
Stright of the Captain's Kids, bowled a 253 single and a 532
triple, to gain two points.
The league standings as of Oct. 22 are: Marionettes 45;
Auleen's Angels 32; Shirt's Girls 27; Trouble 25; No Names
21; Blazers 20; Old Timers 15; Captain's Kids 11.
TUESDAY MIXED
Dick Mclean and Dennis Schmidt both continued their
. fine bowling and were the deciding factors, as the Tricky
Six beat out the Unpredictables 7 - 0. Dick and Dennis roll-
ed 748 and 701 triples respectively. Gene Powell rolled a 601
triple to help Bell's Angel's beat the Pin Pickers 5 - 2.
Harvey Culbert rolled a 314 single and 798 triple to get the 2
points.
Don Carrick had a 674 triple as the Unknowns and Bold
Eagles split 4 - 3. George Sutton came in off the bench, to
lead the Eagles with a 621 triple.
Francis Merkley and Olive Gilbert led the G.M.C.'s to a 4
- 3 split with the Dirty Half Dozen. Francis rolled a 280
single and 679 triple while Olive rolled a 640 triple. Larry'
Million rolled a 289 single and 730 triple for the Dirty half. -
Chris Littlechild rolled a 585 triple as the ?'s surprised
Barb's Gang 5 - 2. Marj Moore had a 617 triple for the Gang.
Richard Ottewell had a big night with 261, 278, 275 singles
and an 814 triple, as the Frame Ups defeated the
Tailenders 7 - 0. Jim Martin had a 588 triple for the
Tailenders. •
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON LADIES
The standings tightened this week with only nine points
separating the top nine teams.
Karen Pounder, with 301 and 736 was hot for the Sweet
Peas, who stole 5 pts from the top place Bluebelles. Marie
Park led her team with 209 and 552.
Buttercups, with Grace Mugford's 208 and Helen
Russell's 575 also took five points from the Forget-Me-Nots
who had a 245 from Olive Gilbert and 552 from Shirley
Smith.
Daffy Dillies, in spite of Daisy Scott's 224 and 581 manag-
ed only two points from Doreen's Daisies, who were hot this
week, Audrey Brindley had 230 and 654, while the other
ladies bowled
well over th
eir averages.
es.Tulips won out over Mary's GoId5 • 2, Irene Sparks led
Tulips with 242 and 570, while Yvonne Dougherty was tops
with 222 and 584 for her team.
Mildred Cook's 224 and 557 led Roses to five points from
Snapdragons. Highs of 226 and 580 were bowled by Sheila
Brownlee.
Tiger "tallies", led by Barb Pigg's 242 and 579 swept the
Carnations 7 - 0. Joyce Hamilton was high with 203 and 583.
THURSDAY NIGHT LADIES
They came to all shapes and sizes. From ghoulish ghouls,
to pretty maidens, to take their place on the lanes at Little
Bowl on Thursday night. A very good turnout of girls dress-
ed in Halloween costumes ready for a night of fun. After
one foolish game the eight teams got down to the serious
business of struggling for points.
Wallbangers took charge with 3 points over the Trouble
Makers who took 2. Sandy Fielder had the high single for
the season. with a terrific single of 294. Sheila Brownlee
had a good double of 397.
Barb Adair with a double of 371 helped the Yo Yo's take
three points from Team Canada. Alice Koopmans was con-
sistent with a 317 double

Celia Drennan's single of 220 and Mary Lamb's single of
201, grabbed three points from the Alley Cats. Pat Brown
had the high double for that team with a 356.
Carrie Middel of the Spare Parts, bowled a 219 and had
plenty of help from other members of the team to take
three points. The What Not's took 2 points with Sheila
Faber being their high bowler with a 356 double.
.Del Mitchelmore's 654 triple took top honours for the
women this week, while teammate Sonny Moore rolled a
712 to help out. Del and Sonny led the Falcons to a five -point
win over the Ghost Busters. Ray Hartun was high roller for
the 'Busters' with a 503.
Ernies Road House took five points from Hotel Bedford,
with Lorraine Chamney's 561 triple showing the way. John
Allen led the Hotel with 694.
Lee Ryan's 699 was only good enough to take one game
away from the Go -Getters. Kevin Meriam rolled a 635, to
lead his team to the five -point victory.
The Country Kids' strong team effort took five points
from A & P, wiith`Peter DeGroot's 574 on top. Steve Allen
rolled the men's high triple of 731 for the A & P team.

THURSDAY MIXED
The Dizastors went against the Semi's, winning two
games. The "A" team won two games against the
Copycats.
Elsa Fickert had a triple of 632.
The Night Owls won two games against the Four
'Seasons.
SENIOR CITIZENS LEAGUE
Thursday morning play saw the G & M's take five points,
to the Scatterbrain's two. Gwyn McCrae had a 208 single
and 508 triple, Mildred Cook also had a 208. Kay Glen bowl-
ed a 506 triple for the Scatterbrains.
Pin Pickers took seven from the Luckless Jems. Joan
Thompson coming through with a 555 triple, Mary Harmen
with a 191 was tops for the Jems.
Art's Tarts bowled well taking two games from Ed's
Girls. Art had a 198 while Ed rolled a 202. The Ups & Downs
were high against the Headpins with Irene Sparks' 512 tri-
ple, Esther Murphy's 199 single, 104 over her average,
enabling them to grab 5 points. Ed Smythe's 195 was top for
the Headpins.
The battle between top teams, Jim's and the Madcaps,
reslted in a win for the Madcaps. Marie Parks was in great
form for the Caps with a 241 single and a nice 597 triple
along with a 159 from Ann Sanderson. Virn's Captain Myr-
tle Mullet had a 180 and Vi Raynard a 173 to end with 2
points to the Cap's 5. YBC
Saturday was a special week for YBC Bowlers. Each
Bowler had the opportunity to bring a friend along to bowl
with them.
The purpos#bf this was to introduce some new people to
bowling and to get them interested in joining the league.
The top three Junior and Senior bowler -buddy pairs
were: Tim GerriLs and Paul Schoemaker, with 1130 pts :
Grant Langlois and Paul Gavigon. with 1027 pts.: Ken
Morley and Dean Jeffrey. with 1012 pts.
