Vikings take
consolation
The GDCI Senior Vikings had a very suc-
cessful week in conference and exhibition
basketball play. The Goderich girls increas-
ed their Huron -Perth record to 6 - 0 with an
easy 64 - 34 win over Stratford Central on
Tuesday.
The Vikes started slowly, giving the Strat-
ford girls "false hope" as they led 4 - 0 in the
early going. The score was 15 - 8 for
Goderich at the end of the quarter as they
started to play team basketball and take
control of the game.
Kim Fritzley led the Vikings with 34
points. Chris Stapleton added 14 and Anne
Allan 11, to give Goderich three players in
double figures. Allison Graham, Kathleen
Donnelly and Sarah Alexander rounded out
the scoring with a basket each.
On Thursday the Vikings hosted the
Sacred Heart Crusaders, from Walkerton in
an exhibition game. The Vikes decided the
game early, outscorirfg their opponents 22 - 3
in the first quarter as they tuned up for the
weekend tournament at Medway.
Kim Fritzley again led the scorers with 27
points. Allison Graham added a season high
18 points. Anne Allan had 12, Cathie Gallow
and Chris Stapleton five each, Mary Alex-
ander four and Mary Margaret Murphy,
Kathleen Donnelly and Joanne Campbell
had a basket each.
The Vikings won the Consolation Cham-
pionship at the Medway Invitational Tour-
nament on Saturday.
Goderich opened the tournament against
the team which is rated number one in Lon-
don - the Lucas Vikings, a team the GDCI
Vikings have beaten twice this season.
However, luck was not with the Goderich
team as point guard Allison Graham injured
her shoulder the night before and was
unable to play.
The game was close, with the Vikings los-
ing 44 - 38, even though they did outscore the
Lucas team in two quarters.
Kim Fritzley and Anne Allan led the Vik-
ings with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Cathie Gallow added eight points. Joanne
Campbell, who made her first start scored
four, as did Christine Stapleton. Jennifer
Peters added a basket.
The Vikings were supported by many
Goderich fans who helped keep the vocal
Lucas fans (parents) in check.

The GDCI junior Vikings humbled the
Stratford Central girls in girls' basketball
action last Tuesday in Stratford, 43 -16.
The. Vikings used a full court press in the
first quarter, but some -cold shooting left
them up only 8 - 0, despite many inside shots -
which resulted from the press.
In the second quarter the Vikings began to
find the range. Central was handicapped by
the lack of offensive shooters and the game
became more one-sided as it progressed.
Jenny Allen, with 14 points, and Mary
Katharine Stapleton, with 10, led the Vikings
offensively. Katharine Murphy bad six
points, Susan Murphy added five and Erin
Robinson, Robin Engelstad, Carol
MacEwan and Rhonda Teal had two points

34-26 by Stratford
BY TD
The GDCI midget girls were defeated by
Stratford Central 34 - 26, in Huron Perth
Conference basketball Tuesday in Stratford.
The Stratford girls looked like they were
going to blow the Vikings right out of the
gym, with a 12 - 2 barrage in the first
quarter. Stratford led 16 - 8 by halftime, but
in the second half the Vikings got into the
game.
Maureen Sfapletdn was a one -girl gang for
the Viking, stealing the ball under her own
basket, driving the length of the floor and
scaring points. She wound up with a total of
14 for the game.
Rhonda Teal, with six, Mary Jo Evans,
with four, and Pam Fritzley, with two
points, rounded out the Viking offence.
Fritzley also played a good defensive game,
picking off several Stratford passes. •
The Vikings were able to close the gap to a
two point deficit, 28 - 26, in the fourth
quarter, but thequicker, taller Central team
scored three more baskets, to solidify the
victory.

with 14 points.
