Crime Week is
November 4-10
Ontario Solicitor General, the Honourable
George W. Taylor, has announced that the
week of November 4 to 10 will be Crime
Prevention Week in Ontario. In making the
announcement, the Solicitor General noted
that "Crime Prevention Week in Ontar
will be an opportunity to recogose
public spirited individuals sses and
organizations who have helped make On-
tario a safer place in which to live and
work."
The primary purpose of Crime Prevention
Week in Ontario, though, will be to focus at-
tention on the many ways in which everyone
can be involved in helping to prevent crime.
For this reason, the Ministry of the Solicitor
General has adopted the theme of
'Crimeproofing' to convey the positive
aspects of crime prevention.
According to Mr. Taylor, "Both the
Ministry and our advisory committee of
public and private organizations want to
communicate the message that "crime
prevention is more a matter of pro -active
awareness than fear -inspired reaction.
`Crimeproofing' says to the people of On-
tario that, yes, you can make a difference
either individually or in concert with others
in your community."
During Crime Prevention Week in On-
tario, the Ministry of the Solicitor General of
Ontario will be conducting a series of public
`Crimeproofing Seminars' across the pro-
vince. A feature of each seminar will be the
presentation of the first annual Ontario
Solicitor General Crime Prevention Awards
to individuals anfl organizations deserving
of special recognition for their crime
prevention efforts in the past.
Seminars and awards presentations will
be held in Toronto, Hamilton, Kingston,
Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor, London, Thunder
Bay, Ottawa, North Bay and Belleville. Peo-
ple wishing to participate in a `Crimeproof-
ing Seminar' are invited to contact their
local Chief of Police for more information.
The Ministry of the Solicitor. General of
Ontario is responsible for law enforcement
and public safety in the province. Crime
Prevention Week in Ontario is organized by
the Ministry in cooperation with local and
provincial police forces.
