Legion prepares for Poppy Fund'
canvass and cenotaph services
BY NEIL SHAW
Goderich Legion Branch 109 Poppy Chair-
man, Howard Carroll, announced phis week
that plans have now been completed for the
Annual Poppy Canvass and Services of
Remembrance. All organizations and major
businesses in torn have been contacted re-
questing their purchase of a wreath or a
donation to the branch poppy fund.
A special bulletin has been mailed to each
member of the branch requesting the sup-
port of the poppy canvass, the church
parade and the service at the Cenotaph. For
any donation of $5 or more to the Poppy
Fund, a receipt for tax purposes may be ob-
tained from the poppy chairman. The finan-
cial support of the poppy fund has been en-.
couraging and Comrade Carroll would ap-
preciate all financial returns by November
11.
As Remembrance Day occurs on a Sun-
day this year all members are to,note the
change from our normal pattern, the poppy
canvass this year will be held on Sunday,'
November 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. At this
time members of Branch 109 will conduct a
house to house canvass of the town, to give
each citizen an apportunity to contribute to.
the Poppy Fund. Legion canvassers are re-
quested to pick up their poppy box and area
to be covered, early hi ihv onixiuvu*e vi awe
day, November 4. Members of the Ladies
Auxiliary will be distributing poppies at
strategic areas in town on November 9 and
10. Poppy boxes are also available at
various outlets in the community for those
who may be missed during the house ,to
house canvass. The distribution of poppies is
the main source of revenue for the Poppy
Fund and your generous support is re-
quested.
All donations to the Poppy Fund are held
in a trust account. Poppy campaigning ex-
penses are limited to the purchase of pop-
pies, wreaths and administration. Costs dur-
ing the poppy campaign are relatively low
as all the work connected with the campaign
is done by volunteers.
The use of the poppy fund is limited to the
following items:- prizes to students who ex-
cel in the annual poem, essay and poster
contest based on the Remembrance Day
theme; the cost of operating a service
bureau which assists disabled veterans who
are seeking a pension or medical aid; the an-
nual branch bursaries which are awarded to
the children and grandchildren of ex -service
personnel who cannot afford to give their
children education beyond the high school
level; comforts for veterans in hospital;
emergency assistance to veterans and their
dependants and community hospital equip-
ment. This is the only time of the year that
legion branches appeal to the public for
donations to the Poppy Fund.
This year the annual branch church
parade will be held on Sunday, November 11
at North Street United Church. In order to
be at the Church and then at the Cenotaph
for the Remembrance Day service at 11
a.m. the members of the branch, the aux-
iliary and the local squadron of the air
cadets are requested to be at the Legion Hall
by 9:15 a.m. on November llth. The parade
will move off from the Legion Hall at 9:30
a.m. A bus will be available at the Legion
Hall for all disabled veterans who. are not
able to join the parade. If you require a ride
to the Legion bus please contact Howard
Carroll at 524-7969 or the Legion Hall.
All members of the branch, veterans and
citizens of the community are invited to be
present at the Remembrance Day service at
the Cenotaph on The Square on, Sunday,
November 11.
During Poppy Week wear a poppy, the
symbol of sacrifice and on November 11 join
the Remembrance Day service for together
we remember those who paid the supreme
sacrifice for those freedoms that we enjoy
today.
