There were plenty of bargains to attract the curious and browsers at the annual Salvation Army Pumpkin Patch Tea and Bake Sale Saturday. Here a group of patrons examine crafts and various ar- ticles for sale. (photo by Dave Sykes) Writer's comments violate basic historical investigation principles Dear editor, 1 am writing in response to the Letter which appeared in the Signal -Star on Oc- tober 24 entitled "Ecumenical Councils Add Confusion to Christianity says Barney" by Mr. C.F. Barney. In my opinion Mr. Barney's letter smacks of low-level scholarship and several of his comments plainly violate the principles of basic historical investigation. At one point Mr. Barney asserted that the dogma of the Trinity was imposed upon the Council of Nicea, 325 A.D., by Emperor Con- stantine. By my impression, he accused the Emperor of twisting the arms of the ec- clesiastics until they gave in to the Emperor's wishes, against their better sense. Mr, Barney's accusation is' based on guesswork. No record of the Council's pro- ceedings and no single diary by a bishop in attendance support the claim here cited. Ad- mittedly, Constantine may have felt in 325 that a doctrinal statement of the faith would benefit the Church, thus he may have push- ed for one. Then again, Constantine may have taken no active part in the proceedings which finally produced the Nicene Creed. Whichever was the case is not our privilege to know. Anything beyond this is only fan- tasy. Mr. Barney also claimed that the divinity of Jesus Christ was not a component of the Christian faith prior to the first ecumenical council whet; he wrote, "Until Nicea, the doctrine that God and Christ were not iden- tical, only similar, held good." I'm not sure what Mr. Barney's source is, but he may want to get a refund. "Little Joe's" Bluewotei Coffee Shop 355 BAYFIELD ROAD GODERICH 524-4331 LETTERS one, catholic, apostolic church well before Nicea: Many works of the early Church Fathers bears this out. Examine, for exam- ple, Novation's work On the Trinity and Origen's On First Principles both written in the third century; again, look at Tertullian's many magnificient works but especially his, Against Praxis written in the late second century; or study the work To The Ephe- sians by Ignatius of Antioch. By the way, this last work reveals the Jesus Christ was considered to be God even two centuries before Nicea. It reads in part: "There is one Physician both flesh and spirit, begotten and unbegotten, in man, God, in death, true life, born from Mary and from God, first - passible then impassible, Jesus Christ our Lord." • Solid evidence indicates that prominent churchmen in every region of the empire prior to the Council of Nicea maintained and promoted the divinity of Jesus Christ. Frankly, I found Mr. Barney's letter to have disclosed a great deal about himself and his intentions. In my opinion he is strug- gling to. spawn several misconceptions. Maybe Mr. Barney ,as not aware of the fallacies and errors which trouble his sources. In any case, if Mr. Barney chooses to go on believing that the doctrine of the divinity of Christ was a fabrication of "power politics" at Nicea - that is, never a component of the faith prior to that Council - he will do so even though evidence over- whelmingly proves him wrong.
