The situation was brought to the board's attention in September, when it was reported that there was a lengthy waiting list for patients needing physiotherapy. At the October meeting the board discussed a recommendation from the hospital's Medical Advisory Committee, that the hospital immediately advertise for an addi- tional physiotherapist. While the board acknowldged the increas- ed demand for the, physiotherapy depart- ment's services, they declined to take any immediate action, but are giving the matter further consideration. NEW PUMPS The Medical Advisory Committe recom- mended the hospital consider purchase of four new infusion pumps. The new pumps would be all of the same manufacture and replace three pumps, of differing models, presently owned by the hospital. With trade-in of the old pumps, the cost of replacement will be about $6,000. QUAL TY ASSURANCE A report from Chief of Staff Dr. Michael Conlon commented on the implementation of a quality assurance program at the hospital. Dr. Conlon's report indicated that a recent seminar of hospital chiefs of staff, held in Toronto, focused a great deal of attention on the development of such a program. It was suggested that the hospital set up a quality assurance committee, consisting of representatives from various ,departments. This committee would be responsible for seeing that an on-going process of self - appraisal takes place in each department. Conlon himself, was not enthusiastic about the process because he felt it would create a great deal of administrative work but, "contribute little, if anything, to overall patient care." Woman jailed 90 days for killing husband Citing exceptional circumstances and claiming a deterrent was unnecessary, On- tario Chief Justice Gregory Evans sentenc- ed a Goderich woman to 90 days in jail for the stabbing death of her husband. After pleading guilty to manslaughter after admittedly stabbing her husband with a steak knife August 7, 1983, Doris Noreen Evenshen was sentenced to 90 days in jail. Chief Justive Evans also ordered her im- mediate release so she can pursue treat- ment under a temproray absence program. This will also be followed by a period of pro- bation to be determined by psychiatrist Dr. Michael Conlon. Evenshen was charged with second degree murder for killing her husband of 25 years, Myron, aged 44, with a steak knife following an argument in their Cambridge Street home. Police were called to the home by neighbours and found the husband lying unconscious on the floor. Mrs. Evenshen was sitting on the couch. Both were taken to hospital where Evenshen died the next day. Court was told that Mrs. Evenshen was the victim of repeated abuse over the 25 year turbulent marriage and required hospital treatment on several occasions. Evenshen died from a,single blow from a knife with a .felxible blade. Court was told that the knife struck the fifth rib and entered the apex of the victim's heart.
