TERRY FOX
July 28, 1958 Terrance Stanley Fox was born.
March 8,- 1977 Terry's right leg was amputated six inches
above the knee.
March, 1979 Terry began a running program. And the
arduous training for his Marathon of Hope was begun. During his
training he ran over 3,000 miles.
October 15, 1979 In a letter Terry Fox wrote to the
Canadian Cancer Society he explained why he wished to run across
Canada. On the eve of the operation that removed his right leg due
to bone cancer, he read an article about a one -legged American
marathon runner. He decided then to try and run across Canada to
help people with cancer. He ended his letter by saying:
"We need your help. The people in cancer clinics all over the
world need people who believe in miracles. I'm nota dreamer,
and I'm not saying that this will initiate any kind of definitive
answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to."
Apri 112, 1980 ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND - Terry dipped
his artificial leg into the Atlantic and set out on an odyssey that
would take him 2/3 of the way across Canada, through six
provinces, running an average of 26 miles a day on his "Marathon of
Hope".
September 1, 1980 After 144 days and 3,339 miles, Terry
had to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The medical
diagnosis shocked the nation. Terry's, cancer had spread to his
lungs.
The next day Isadore Sharp telegrammed the Fox family with a
commitment that the Four Seasons would organize a fund raising
event every year until cancer was beaten:
"The Marathon of Hope has just begun. You started it. We will
not rest until your dream to find a cure to cancer is realized.
Together with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Track and
Field Association and Fitness and Amateur Sport, Canada, plus the
Four Seasons put together an event to perpetuate the "Marathon of
Hope'',to be called The Terry Fox Run for the Marathon of Hope.
September 9, 1980 In just over 48 hours, CTV television
staff organized a star-studded telethon for Terry Fox that lasted five
hours. Ten million dollars was raised. An overwhelming testimonial
to both Terry's courage and his quest.
June 28, 1981 After treatment with chemotherapy and
interferon, Terry. Fox died at the Royal Columbian Hospital, New
Westminster, B.C.
September 23, 1984 The date is set for The Fourth Annual
Terry Fox Run. This year, is expected to be bigger. Get involved and
help raise money for cancer research.
