"$unit sbo " says Marybelle Ford of
the Ham* eEb, Lung Association.
"Mechazuics are exposed to a variety of tox-
ic substances and a high level exposure over
a period of time may lead to health pro-
blems."
A common shop hazard is carbon monox-
ide from car exhaust. This odourless, col-
ourless, tasteless gas reduces the oxygen
carrying capacity of the blood. The effects
are first felt by those tissues most sensitive
`to a lack of oxygen such as the brain and the
heart. Mechanics should always be alert for
the early signs of carbon monoxide poison-
ing _ headache, dizziness, dim vision,
nauseaand vomiting. High concentrations
of carbon monoxide may result in death.
The garage environment contains addi-
tional hazards for mechanics. These include
,le adaim-auto,exhaust, sulfuric—acid gas
and particulate -sulfates found
automobiles with catalytic converters,
asbestos in brake linings, as well as the
many chemicals contained in brake fluids
and oils used in the shop.
"Cigarette smoking greatly increases the
hazard. for auto mechanics," says Miss
Ford. It appears that some of the elements
contained in cigarette smoke and the
various chemicals found in auto repair work
may attack different parts of the
respiratory system at the same time. Their
effects may add together, or they may com-
bine to give an effect even greater than their
sum, making them especially damaging.
What can mechanics do to protect
themselves from a potentially hazardous en-
vironment?
"First of all," says Miss Ford, "if you are
a smoker — quit. Give your lungs every
chance to work as they should.' As well,
adequate ventilation, installed and function-
ing properly, is essential for a safe work en-
vironment.
The Lung Association has an excellent
pamphlet with information on the hazards in
the auto repair shop. Call 271-7500
