The .arable Franc!$Gerard Carter,'',
Judge of Huron county,, reCently,ar pounced
the opening of the offices of the'Connnleslen
of Inquiry into Marketing Practices for the
Potato Industry in Eastern Canada. Judge
Carter heads the Commission established
by Her Excellency, the Governor General
on May 31, 1984. • • •
The Commission has been establishecl,in
order to inquire into and report upon, the
production base of the potato industry in the
provinces of Ontario,. Quebec, New
Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova
Scotia, and to make recommendations for
improvements.

tions and government programs in support
of marketing activities.
. ._... Other areas of ,study ..'-,will involve
transportation assistance and market
potential in interprovincial, intraprovincial
and export trade. The Inquiry will studythe
nature of organization and competition in
other countries.
The effectiveness and efficiency of pricing
policies, the protection of the interests of
producers, processors and consumers, and
the relative access and influence of each
component sector that make up the Cana-
dian industry will be incorporated in the In-
quiry.
Judge Carter has engaged a small staff to
assist with the Commission of Inquiry and
has appointed Daniel J. Murphy, Q.C., of
Goderich, as Legal Counsel to the Commis-
sion. Mr. Murphy is a Bencher of the Law
Society of Upper Canada.

The Recreation Board will meet tonight
(Wednesday), September 12 at 7:30 p.m. in
the grand stand.
The Goderich Economic Development
Committee will meet Thursday, September
13 at noon in town hall.
The Local Architectural Conservation Ad-
visory Committee will meet Thursday,
September 13 at 7:30 p.m. in town hall.
The Maitland Cemetery Board will meet
Friday, September 14 at 10:30 a.m. in town
hall.
Goderich Town Council will meet Mon-
day, September 17. at 7:30 p.m. in town hall.

The Huron County Branch of the Ontario
Genealogical Society is holding their 5th An-
nual Genealogical workshop on Saturday,
September 22, 1984 at the Canadian Legion
Hall in Goderich. Lectures by guest
