John B,odie's two -run double in the fourth
inning scored the only runs of the game as
French Cleaners defeated Sherwood Ex-
press 2-0 in the deciding game of their
quarter -final series in the Goderich In-
dustrial Fastball League. French now ad-
vances to the semi-finals against Kirkey's
Car Care.
Don Bogie scattered seven hits and struck
out ten Sherwood batters in picking up the
shut -out victory. Sherwood pitcher Simon.
Langlois pitched a three -hitter despite the
loss. Langlois and Greg, Hansen led all hit-
tpGa inthe game v t reea_hits.
Earlier in the week, Sherwood had taken a
2-1 lead in games by winning 5-0 but French
-evened the series -with a 5-3 win in game
four. Langlois tossed a five -hit shut -out in
winning game three. Hansen, -Al Sygrove
and Brad Otterbein each had two hits for
Sherwood while Don Bogie had two hits for
French. French scored three runs in the
fifth inning of game four to break a 2-2 tie
and coast to a 5-3 victory. Kevin Jewell, Don
Bogie, George Sutton, Dan Willis and Jim
Martin each had two hits of French's 12 -hit
'attack. Brian MacKenzie added a home run
to power the victory, Don Bogie pitched a
six -hitter for French, of which three hits
came off the bat of Al Sygrove.
- Meanwhile Kirkey's advanced to the •
semi-finals with an easy three game sweep
of Hayter's, winning game three last week
by a score of 9-3.
Kirkey's scored five times in the fifth inn-
ing and three more times in the sixth inning
to overcome a 3-1 Hayter lead to win 9-3.
Phil Petrie had given Hayter's the lead with
a two -run homer in the third inning. Dan
Maillet led Kirkey's offensively, getting
thl'ee of their eight hits. Dave McDonald had
two of the seven hits Hayter's managed off
Kirkey pitcher Terry Johnston.
Denomme's defeated the Orioles twice
this past week by scores of 4-1 and 4-3 to win
their series three games to one and advance
to the semi-finals against Canada Company,
who had already swept Hotel Bedford three
games to none.
John Verwey fired a three hitter in game
three and struck out nine batters as
Denomme's defeate.d the Orioles 4-1. Willie
Denomme, John Hoy and Jim Bell each had
two hits to lead Denomme's nine -hit attack.
Steve Berry added a key triple in a three -
run third inning, which brok a 1-1 tie and led
Denomme's to the victory.
Denomme's then hung on, barely, in game
four to clinch the series. Denomme's built
up a 4-0 lead but the Orioles fought back to
close the gap to 4-3 and left the tying run on
third base in the final inning. Willie
Denomme led Denomme's offensively with
three hits, Steve Haggitt and Kevin` Adams
each had two hits for the Orioles.
Upsets in
the making
Only five games in the second round of
Goderich Men's Slow -Pitch League semi-
final action have been played since last
week but, as most of you already know,
there are upsets in the making.
Goderich Auto Sales, for the second time
this season, have put out Ideal Supply's
flame.
Ron Klages gave Ideal a first inning lead
but Bill Fritzley and Dale Baechler scored
in the top of the second to give Auto Sales a
2-1 lead.
The lead flip flopped until the top of the
sixth. Tied up at four each, Auto Sales
scored John Phillips, Mark lassaline and
Carman Fielder on hits by Harold I.eddy,
Glen Macuspey and a double by Bill
Fritzley.
. That 7-4 lead held up as six of the last
seven batters for Ideal flied out.
Auto Sales now lead the best two of three
series, one game to zip. Play resumed Mon-
day night.
In the other "A" series, Canadian Tire
simply destroyed Goderich Chrysler 17-8.
Earlier this year, it was said that Canadian
Tire has more than just tires. They do - they
have base hit potential and unless Chrysler
realigns their defence, their warranty will
expire. With predictable hitters, you have to
play a rover and challenge their bats to go
away from their strength. We'll see what
happens as they meet again tonight
(Wednesday ) and if necessary, next Tues-
day. Should be a heck of a game!
In "B" Division, we have another sur-
prise. Century 21 downed Gas Rite by a
score of 7-3. Dave Denomme at three for
three, John Orr at three for four and big bad
Bill Rahbek at two for three led the offen-
sive thrust for Century 21. Gas Rite was
never in the game and have to wake up
before this Thursday if they hope to prolong
it to next Wednesday.
Other games were ho-hum affairs as the
"C" Division Murphy's Green Machine
blanked the Renegades 12-0 and the Coyotes
team edged Little Bowl by a score of 13-9.
Those series resumed Tuesday and Wednes-
day of this week respectively.
The only series not started when this arti-
cle was due was Garb and Gear vs.
Ultramar. They kicked off their series on
'Monday and it should be a good one. Accor-
ding to a good source on the Garb and (rear
team, Frawley, Rabbit and Hutch are due to
go down two straight - but this same source
has been in error before! Better tune in next
week to get the factual outcome!
