The Goderich Signal-Star, 1984-09-05, Page 15its Eight years ago Helen Braithwaite began to auspeether batik dyes and waxes were af- fecting heir health. She had chronic bron- chitis, laryngitis, and severe migraines. After she quit using fibre reactive dyes, the symptoms went'away ... temporarily. Helen now, has permanent lung damage, something she attributes to the dyes. "It may come as a surprise to many peo- ple involved in arts and crafts that some materials they're using could be harmful," says Cindy Curik, Health Education Pro- gram Consultant for the Lung Association. Powdered clays used in ceramics and pot- tery contain varying proportions of free silica which if inhaled year after year, away The Lung Association has produced a ,booklet called "Health Bazar* in Arts and Crafts". A few safety precautions covered in the booklet are: • 1. Before youuse an act product, try to find out what the ingredients are. The inanufactwer may be able to provide you with , data heets on their product. If not, contact your local arts or craft association. 2. Read product labels before using the product. 3. Always work in .a studio or room separate from your living area. 4. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the work area. 5. Do not eat, drink or smoke in the studio. may lead to "potters' rot" a respiratory This will reduce the hazard of ingesting art disease that takes at least 10 years to materials. develop. Painters too, are at risk of exposure to hazardous materials. Lead based pigments should not be used. Accidental ingestion of these harmful pigments or even bad habits such as putting the paint brush handle (or tip) in your mouth can be dangerous. Curik also points out that removing paint can be as hazardous as applying it, and here it is not only the painter that encounters this hazard but also the furnisher refinisher. "Many paint removers contain the sol- vent, methylene chloride, which when inhal- ed in sufficient amounts is converted to car- bon monoxide in the blood. This reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and thus puts certain groups such as people with heart or lung conditions, the elderly, children and smokers at risk," says Curik. Although the hazards for people involved in arts and crafts, either professionally or as a hobby, seem many, the risks can be reduc- ed or eliminated by knowing and using safety precautions. -- New eye protection program The Ontario Association of Optometrists has developed an occupational vision pro- gram to combat the serious rate of eye in- juries in the workplace each year. The Ontario Association of Optometrists feels it can help' lower the unpleasant statistics reported by the Worker's Compen- sation Board where, the more than 20,000 eye injury claims in Ontario in 1983, 5,917 were for lost -time claims due to eye injury. In this category, 172 claims were for per- manent eye injuries, '16 of which were blind eyes, 15 enucleated eyes (entire eye lost) and 18 retinal injuries. One out of every three reported eye injuries is a time -lost claim. The Ontario Association of Optometrists program involves optometrists in the pre- sent eye safety programs provided by most employers. A professional eye examination based on the on-the-job visual needs of the employee is performed, designed to max- imize a worker's visual performance. The optometrist then designs the proper lens and helps the employee choose an appropriate frame. Both lens and frame must carry the manufacturer's assurance that the Cana- dian Standards Association safety 'stan- dards are met. However, the greatest challenge with safety eyewear is to see that it is worn. Too many employees complain that their safety glasses , are uncomfortable, cause headache§ or distortion, or just don't suit the visual demands of the job. When the glasses come back from the lab, the op- tometrist intervenes before they are worn to check that th ' prescription, design, and fabrication are as specified. This includes "piano" (non-prescription) lenses which often are distorted and unacceptable. The frames are carefully adjusted so the lenses are visually centred and the fit is ap- propriate for the individual. In this way, comfort is maximized and glasses are adapted for continuous use. This program, called the Occupational Vi- sion Care and Eye Protection Program, has proven successful in Alberta where it has been provided by the Alberta Optometric Association since 1965. One large company employing 11,000 people has reported a drop in serious eye injuries from 12-13 per year to zero per year. The Ontario Association of Optometrists is currently developing a wide range of related occupational, educational and en- vironmental services to compleirnent their occupational vision program. The program is designTd to help employers meet the challenge of eye protection in the 80s.
