Police News and Views
Identify your p
and lock ,vehicle
This week News and Views would like to
point ,out that theft of flags has been a pro-
blem in this town for a number of years,
although it has dropped off in the past year
or so.
Persons putting up flags are requested to
put their name or some other identification
on the flag (usually on the part abovethe
cord). • This will enable police to identify a
flag should one be recovered.
In the past, we have had to sell recovered
flags at the police auction because we could
not prove ownership - this is more of a pro-
blem with commonly used flags ( Canadian,
Goderich, etc) - even the less eommon flags
( shipping lines, etc.) should be marked.
• Another point to remember is that very.
few thefts occur from LOCKED vehicles.
Locking your vehicle at night - even in your
own driveway - is a good crime prevention
tip which may save your belongings. Your
player tapes should also be marked with
your name, etc. We have also sold quite a
number of recovered tapes at the auctions
because ofliegcif:identification.
Remember: You may borrow a marking
ripen from the police station to mark your
belongings.
Noise is a problem in Goderich, and this
was the subject of a discussion at the last
police commission meeting. When the vehi-
cle squeals tires outside your house, the
•
police do not normally go to that location
because the vehicle has left and is in another
section of town. The police do their best to
locate a vehicle, but often the caller has no
idea what type of vehicle it was
( understandable when you jump out of bed
to look out the window ). However, a call to
the police station does enable the police to
be on the lookout for a suspect (quite often
the officers have a pretty good idea of who
MAY have caused the noise). The vehicles
are checked and often other traffic charges
result or liquor is seized, despite the fact we
have no evidence to support an Unnecessary
Noise charge.
So far this year, the police have dealt with
49 persons for Unnecessary Noise from a
motor vehicle; this compares with 34 in the
same period last year. A majority of these
have resulted from the police themselves
without complaints from citizens. Traffic
enforcement to date is 1045 compared with
550 the same period last year. This clearly
shows that your police department is out
there doing a good job; although from time
to time we get a complaint from a citizen, as
happened recently.
The past long weekend, police carried out
the wishes of the police commission for
more traffic and anti -noise enforcement.
Over the four-day period, police checks and
patrols were increased (on overtime) and
the following charges were laid: one
criminal, 10 liquor, one other and 34
Highway Traffic Act ( including two
Careless Driving and four for Unnecessary
Noise). Drivers are advised that -this type of
enforcement will continue and those causing
noise, speeding, etc., can expect to be pay-
ing the price ( to the provincial court I.
