Book will till about a war fought in Canada Dear Editor, While the state of Canada's Navy is being questioned today, there's much we still don't know about what happened to it in World War II. Many of Canada's Navy recruits in World War II came from the inland areas of Canada. Our warships were named after towns and cities of Canada. HMCS Goderich and HMCS Bayfield ( both Minesweepers) were just two examples. Not so well known perhaps were the many who joined DEMS ( Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships). While our attention has been focussed on Europe in this Anniver- sary Year of "D -Day", the unsung heroes - both the DEMS and Navy men who defended Canada's coastal and inland waters - have generally been forgotten. But • the fact re- mains that when the German submarines invaded our waters from 1942 omvard, Cana- dian sailors WERE KILLED IN CANADA by the Nazis who torpedoed some 27 Allied • ships, leaving 23 sunk and 700 lives lost. My book, "Victory in the St. Lawrence - Canada's Unknown War", to be published soon hopefully will help tell Canadians what happened. A hard -cover book, it will have over 150 photos and nearly 200 pages - in- cluding maps - about a war fought in Canada few Canadians know about today. Write Country Bookshelf, RR 2 Petersburg, On- tario NOB 2H0 to order a free descriptive brochure. Yours very truly, James W. Essex, ex Navy W.W. II. A11igttor Pie being served The Blyth Festival is pleased to announce the return of thesmash hit ALLIGATOR PIE at Blyth Memorial Hall on Friday, September 28 at 7:20 p.m. Dennis Lee's awarrPwinning children's poetry books. are brought to life by a high-spirited cast of three plus one lively musician on a synthesizer. Children and adults alike packed the house at Blyth in 1982 to catch what the Toronto Globe & Mail called "that rare occasion on which both excellence and evenness of performance are united in a children's show". ALLIGATOR PIE has delighted capacity audiences since it was first staged in 1974 at Theatre Passe Muraille by Blyth's own Janet AmoS. ALLIGATOR PIE draws on poems from Lee's classics "Garbage Delight", "Nicholas Knock" and "Alligator voted most --poptdar...childre.'s_book_ by librarians across Canada). The poems have been adapted for stage by weaving the characters and stories together with bits of dialogue, music and movement. In Blyth, there will be two performances of ALLIGATOR PIE; a school matinee and a family evening show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $4.50 for all seats, with $1 off that price for those whoalso subscribe to the Blyth Children's Series: Break dancers MITCHELL GOLF CLUB PRO -SHOP SPECIALS Clearing aut all stock.
