Residents enjoy barbecues

Newfoundland and Kim Chester is from
Toronto.
Also assisting Cathy Wiebe in the
Recreation Department are three summer
students - Sharon Gloor, Arlene Lazet and
Linda Wiebe - hired under a Federal
Summer Grant. Because of the extra
assistance, Cathy has been able to plan
many more activities this summer for the
residents.
A hearty welcome to Maitland Manor, is
extended to three new residents, Martha
Millian, Edna Driver and Tim Elliott, , all
from Goderich.
To date we have not had any response to
our Balloon Off last month. If anyone found
one of the red balloons with a tag attached,
please contact Cathy Wiebe at, Maitland
Manor (524-7324). You may be the winner of
a lovely prize.

After their hectic schedule in June,
Maitland Manor residents will be able to
relax and enjoy the numerous barbecues
that have been planned for July.
The Manor , received a Federal New
Horizons Grant of $5,045 and one of the first
purchases to be made will be a gas barbecue
for the Residents.

Ruby Hawthorne, Margaret Humphrey,
Tim Elliott, Mary Johnston, and special
wishes to Charlie Young who is now 102. The
birthday party was held on July 18 at 2
p.m. and Gord Harrison, Lorne Hyde, Eb
and Bill Ross, Audrey Kerr and Laurine
Madge will be on hand for the
entertainment.

residence on Sunday, July 15 at the age of

More than 80 people attended an Open
House held at Knox PresbyterianA hurch in
Goderich last Saturday afternoon in honor of
Eva Somerville who was celebrating her
90th birthday.
Miss Somerville was born to William and
Mary Somerville on July 12, 1894 in
Keewatin, Ontario. on Lake of the Woods.
Her elementary education began there but a
move took her family to Manitoba soon
after, so she spent the next few years
attending public- school °in Arden, 12 miles
from Neepawa, the birth place of Canadian
-��author Margaret Laurance.
Miss Somerville's last elementary school
years were spent' in the Goderich Central
School, now the Huron County Pioneer
Museum. She also attended the Goderich
Collegiate for five years before entering the
Faculty of Education in Toronto in 1913 to
prepare for secondary school teaching.
Her first year of teaching was 1914, the

at Continuation Schools in Grand. Valley and
Creemore and then' at the Owen Sound
Collegiate for about 10 years.
Although teaching was her profession,
additional interests were so numerous that
she had no idle moments. She enjoyed
cooking, gardening, reading, travelling and
photography.
In 1972, Miss Somerville took a Home
Study Course in non-fiction writing and
received a Certificate of Distinction from
the Famous Writers School.
Miss Somerville now resides at the
Mc('orrnick Home in London.' For her
birthday, she received plaques from
Ontario's Premier William Davis and
Canada's Lieutenant -Governor Jean Sauve
and best wishes from her MP, Jack
Burghart and her MPP, Ontario Liberal
header David Peterson..

1914. He predeceased her.
She was a member of Knox United Church
in Auburn.
Besides her husband, she was
predeceased by one son, Charles and one
daughter, Colleen.
She is survived by five daughters, Mrs.
Doug (Minnie) McNeil of Goderich, Mrs.
Mildred Gardner of Goderich? Mrs. Frank
( Evelyn) Treble of London, Mrs. Ford
(Maitie) Little of Bayfield and Mrs. Carl
(Ruth) Thomson of Stratford; one daughter-

son-in-law, Charles McGee of Kintore; 18
grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and

A funeral service was held at Stiles
Funeral Home in Goderich on Tuesday, July
17 at 2 p.m. The Reverend Gary
Shuttleworth of Knox United Church,
Auburn officiated.
Pallbearers were grandsons Paul
Gardner, Gerald Treble, Wayne Millian,
Barry. Millian, Larry Mitchell and Mark
Thomson.
Flower bearers were grandsons, Clare
and Bill Millian.
Interment was in Colborne Cemetery.
IODE will provide funds
Inspired. by an address 'given by Dr. Ben
Gullison at the 84th annual meeting of the
National Chapter -of Canada IODE,the
organization will provide fttnding for an
Operation Eyesight Universal eye camp in
India. Dr.' Gullison is a former Medical
Superintendent of the Arogyavaram Eye
Hospital in that country.

At this eye camp 80 people will undergo
cataract surgery and subsequently receive
eyeglasses, following ten days' hospital care
and food. In addition, 2,500 people will visit
-the eye -camp to have their eyes tested and
to receive drops and/or glasses. The inade-
quate diet of extreme poverty causes
widespread blindness in India.

Leonard Kolkman, son of Tennis Kolkman
of R.R. 6 Goderich and the late Lena
Kolkman, and Dorinda Louise Oke,
daughter of Ken and Ruth Oke of Goderich,
were married in North Street United
Church, Goderich by the Reverend Robert
Ball and the Reverend Harry Vriend on May
26. Matron of honor was Dawn Tucker of
Goderich, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids
were Diana Glousher and Dale Robertson,
both of Goderich, sisters of the bride, Dana
Elsom of Goderich, friend of the bride and
Cathy Oke of R.R. 2 Goderich, cousin of the
bride. Junior bridesmaid was Tonya
Glousher of Goderich, niece of the bride.
Flowergirl was Alesha Glousher of
Goderich, niece of the bride: Groomsman
was Fred Schoemaker of R.R. 4 Goderich,
nephew of ,the groom. Guests were ushered
into the church by. Phil Petrie of Goderich,
friend of the groom, Dick Schoemaker of
R.R. 4'Goderich, friend of the groom, Terry
Schoemaker of R.R. 2 Goderich, nephew of
the groom and Terry Kolkman of Lambeth,
nephew of the groom. Ringbearer was Billy
Tucker of Goderich, nephew of the bride.
Following the wedding ceremony, a
reception was held at Saltford Valley Hall.
After a wedding trip to the East Coast, Mr.
and Mrs. Kolkman took up residence in
