Lisa will be spending two weeks in Mexico, visiting Mexico City, Cuernavaca and Acapulco. She will be meeting other Guides .from around the world: Lisa, a member of the lst Goderich Pathfinders, has been in the Guiding movement for seven years. ( photo by Darrell Kloeze) Five members of the 1st Goderich Pathfinders attended the "Canadian Camporee" last week, sponsored by the Mitten Bay Girl Scout Council (Saginaw) at Camp oak. Hills near Harrison, Michigan. They left from Camp Keewaydin near Amberley on Canada Day with 30 Pathfinders and five leaders from other parts of the Mapleway Area: ,The girls are, left to right, Mary Su MacLennan, Anne Crocker, Erinn Mulhern, Tanya Scruton, and Michelle Rotteau. They enjoyed camping activities with American Girl Scouts as well as visiting Frankenmuth, camping at a State park and swimming in Lake MIchigan. (photo by Darrell 1);loeze ) Reader complains of rude treatment at recent Social Dear Editor, On Saturday, July 1, my wife, daughter, son and his wife and child and I went to the Livery for their Strawberry Social. After standing in line for approximately 15-20 minutes, and watching a select few go by in another line, we finally got to buy six tickets for this event...,. _ _ Upon entering the inside of the Livery, we found it had only 15 small tables which could seat four people each and two longer tables that sat 8-10 people. We waited another 15-20 minutes for a table, and after racing another couple for it, we finally got seated. We then waited for another length of time and finally my son went to find out why we were not being served—other people who had come in after us were being served! Why not. us? This seems to be when the trouble started. He was told in four letter words what he, LETTERS could do. Someone came.over to our table and assumed we were from, and I quote, "That place on Keays Street". After telling this lady that we.were Goderich residents, she again stated that if not from "(quote)- "that Keays Street .property", we must be from (quote) "that mess from the basement of the dentist's office". We finally got our strawberry shortcake. The two young ladies who served us were very nervous, I would suppose; because of the upset at this table. The young man who we first encountered came and apologized for his statement, and we left—not very happy—but we left. A $1 donation would produce fireworks display Dear Editor: The July 1st fireworks display was en- joyed by several thousands of people who lined the beaches, the banks and the scores` of boats. At least 700 cars were parked in the areas down Harbour Hill and St. Christopher's Beach. It has been suggested by many that next year we go all out to seek donations in order to make this an annual event that will entice peoplefor miles around to travel to our town - our own noisy, show to end Canada Day celebrations. My efforts (through your columns) to get donations for this year's fireworks resulted in a total of $211. My thanks to the donors: Goderich Fire Department ( who gave $100); Elsa Haydon; W.J. Denomme Flowers; Susan Chan; Jean Jervis; Jane Hindmarsh; Victoria Street United Church Women; John Huyck; Maurice Wilkinson and Peter Caslick(London) for your kind- ness. A thank you to my partners in fireworks supervision; Chief Bill Beacom and Captain Mike O'Brien of the Goderich Fire•Depart- ment. A special thanks to Terry Watson, Bay City Police Department, who gave his excellent guidance as this was the first time that I had actually "fired" a display. (Terry supervises the annual July Fireworks Display in Bay City where they fire off over $30,000 US every year). Although it is too late to help our 1984 display I will accept donations for the 1985 version. If we received just one dollar from every car driver that used.their vehicle to travel to.see the fireworks (the same for each boat owner) then we would have a nice start for next season. Think about it! If you enjoyed the display would it be worth at least one dollar to go towards an even bigger series of bangs next year? Any donations can be made to me at the police station or at the town hall - for the 1985 Mammoth Super Colossal Firework Display. Yours truly, Patrick King Fireworks Chairman Town of Goderich Wthits driver caught Dear Editor, Recently on our serene tree lined street, a terror which has never before emerged, has suddenly, quickly and defiantly threatened every living creature. On occasions, police and firemen have driven at high speed up or down, however their professions and timing can be a matter of life or death and I am sure the average person can understand their need for promptness. This new peril however, has some of us quite baffled and frightened. This is a dark blue sedan with what looks like the silhouette of a man on the door encircled by a yellow band and the words "Town of Goderich something or other Dept." written on it. Although this person roars by at about the velocity of a'B.B., I have observed several features. He has either racing goggles or large ulacK r Oster uranin ulr uiu a IIeerteu brown cap and uniform, also a long salt and pepper moustache trails behind him in his reckless search for whatever it is he is looking for. However, the mast curious observation seems to be a long brown cane or stick with what appears to be a piece of chalk sticking out the end. Is -this some sort of weapon? flas this man been hired by some kind of evil organization for a deed' most foul? Who is he and what is his purpose'. Could it be that he is a disgruntled actor who was cut from the movie "Cannonball Run"? I hope all safety conscious and concerned citizens of Goderich will keep their eyes peeled for this car and driver and maybe he can, be caught and brought to justice before itis too late. Board says congratulations )Dear )ear Ed itor. I noted recently that your newspaper was announced as a winner of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association Excellence award. On behalf of Ontario's 29,000 real estate brokers and sales representatives, may I salute you and your paper for your Pete Henry, Goderich. achievement. As one group of professionals to another, we send along our congratulations. I know that our members in the Grey -Bruce Board would also wish to add their heartiest congratulations;. Yours sincerely, J. Terry Stafford, President. Watch far schbol buses School may be finished until September but Ontario drivers may still encounter yellow school buses'stopped with the red lights flashing any day of the week and through the summer. Until June 13, the school bus stop law only applied to children being transported to or from school or church or mentally retarded adults being driven to and from -- training centres. Now, an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act allows the use of school buses anytime when transporting children. The amendment was introduced after requests were received from a number of organizations Including; Parks and Recreation Federation, Ontario Campers Association, playground organizers, Association ot Regions and Municipalities and YM and YWCAs. Their common purpose was to make use of the safety attached to the transportation of children in school buses to playgrounds, summer camps and on day trips in the area. While the Highway Traffic Act recognizes that safety factor and allows drivers to use the flashing lights acid requires drivers to bby them, it may some time for Ontarians to get used to those flashing lights during the" summer. The times and locations of those buses will not be consistent with school traffic either. t I find this situation not acceptable as: 1. These people should have known that if you advertize for a Strawberry Social, you should be prepared for it. 2. It was a bright sunny day. They should have'predicted a large crowd. 3. To refer to us, or anyone else, as "from that Keays Street 'property" or "that mess in the basement of the dentist's office" was tilLSO1q §i.
