Sheila Richards, president of the Festival, said that this is a doubly important donation on the part of the company because it also represents' the first time a company has agreed to sponsor a production at the Festival. The sponsorship helps offset the high costs of production in live the.atre. Private funding is essential in theatre to make up the gap between the cost of mounting a production and the moneys raised through Announces director box office and govern- ment grants. "John and the Missus" by well-known. actor and writer Gordon Pinsent will open the 1980 Festival on July 4. The play tells the story of John Munn, a miner in a Newfoundland village. John's family and friends want him to move away from the village to a larger community to escape the unhealthy life of the mine. But John isn't sure he wants to gc and battles with his own conscience' and his self- respect. The show combines music, humour and drama in a way that will make audiences grow to love old John. "John and the Missus" will have 15 per- formances, alternating with Ted Johns' "St. Sam of The Nuke Pile" until August 2. .Huron Country Playhouse is proud to announce that Bernard Hopkins will direct the opening production of Private Lives, • starring Irena Mayeskaand Ian White. 1980 marks a fiftieth anniversary . production of Noel Coward's delightful comedy and the Playhouse is honored to have Mr. Hopkins in the director's chair. A graduate of , R,A.D.A.,- Theatre London's n'ew Artistic Director, Ber- nard Hopkins has ex- celled as an actor, an educator and a director. As an .actor on stage, television and film, he has performed in numerous West End productions, toured through South America and Europe and appeared on many of Canada's major stages, including the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the National Arts Centre and the Stratford Festival.
