' Our visit to your school and community on May 15-17 was a most pleasant and memorable occasion for each of us. Likewise, the earlier visit of GDCI students- to Bay- City Western High School was one of the highlights of our school year. I am certain that each person who participated, in any capacity of the 'music exchange will support my opinion .-that it was a tremendous experience The reception of our young people by all of you was beyond our greatest expectations. Your hospitality, consideration and friendliness was simply overwhelming. All .of • our students • are - still talking about the fun they. had, the friends they made and the thrill of the exchange generally. Each of us wishes to thank the community of Goderich. You are wonderful people that we consider special friends. - All of us at Bay City Western hope that future exchanges, between ow schools and communities will be forthcoming Certainly your motto of Exchange vouchers for seats The Huron Country Playhouse opened its box office to the general public on May 26 - and the response has been overwhelming. Extra staff has been hired to accommodate ticket buyers. Subscription sales of 1,900 to date have ex- ceeded last year's total sales of 1,571. The 1980 goal was set at 2,000 and will no doubt be passed. sur - The . theatre is en- couraging subscription holders to exchange their vouchers for the shows and seats of their choice as soon as possible to avoid any disap- pointment. • Individual ticket sales have at least doubled those of last year...so again, book early. WE HAVE being the ' "Prettiest Town in Canada" is deserved. We would suggest that you include "Friendliest" as well. It would be most ap- propriate. Sincerely, Keith Saxton, Director of Music, Bay City Western High School Hog problems Dear Editor: We are all aware of the drastic price slump in the hog industry which saw prices go from the high 70's to the low 40's in less than a year. We also realize that the present production level has been -cam-pletely absorbed into the marketplace and is doing no more- than meeting the market demands. This is mainly ,._'bp_o,,ause_the Ontari2Po k Producers Marketing Board is doing such a fine job of promoting our pork. But as pork producers, we haven't got the means by which we can obtain the cost of production from our product. As a result of this, coupled with high input costs, many new produpers are in serious financial trouble and the established producers are doing well to meet their commitments. These drastic price fluctuations can no longer be absorbed by the sale of other produce. There is 'an answer, Our fellow farmers in the egg ' and chicken and dairy production industry realize what that answer is. It ' is - supply management with the cost of production in- cluded in the price of the final product. I do not have all the answers but to start with I would like to see supply management at the sow end of the hog production business. Pigs from these sows could also be marketed with the cost of production tied to the final price: This would allow any" farmer who wanted to' feed these pigs the right to 'do so without r ' ;The Magic of ;The Moment; I I I I I suffering losses,, provided he is a good manager. In then last ten to fifteen years smaller farms have disappeared and family farms are disappearing and just. recently foreign ownership has become a problem. I suggest to you there is only one reason for all these mysterious happenings, lack of earning ability in the hands of individual farmers on which to base long range management decisions. If farmers had the security that a cost of production formula would guarantee them, the rural community would remain in- the hands of the 'sons and daughters of the present farmers becaus.e1ar.nung would finally and for the first time, be a° -business where a profit could continually be realized by ha d_ work_and go!)d_. management. In the past months, since last fall, I have spoken to many worried farmers. A great majority of them are concerned for the far- ming industry and for rural Canada as a whole. Most of them realize that without the cost of production formula on which to base the price of our produce, we will be free to go broke, each at our own speed. With'---' our present federal minister of agriculture, Eugene Whelan asking for the support of Ontario far- mers and Canadian farmers in promoting National 'Marketing Boards and supply management on several kinds of products such es hogs, beef and corn and therefore, security and Dan Sheardown GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11,1980,—PAGE r5 prosperity I feel we as concerned pork producers should give him our support. Because if we do not we have no one to blame for our loss of bujs g power or our lower standard of living but ourselves. I would like to get in contact with anyone who shares my concerns. The Huron County Pork Producers Marketing Board, I am sure, would call a meeting to hear the views of the pork producers. If you as a producer of pork are tired of being manipulated, and would like some dependability in our prices, now is the time to Teak out with a united voice if_you would rather have an income you could count on ,from the marketplace rather than an existence from the tax dollars_ o_ f the Canadian cat zef S. t OUld "' ery ' much like to hear from you.
